Had my 05 Tundra AC 2wd 4.7 for almost 12 years and it's been a great truck. I've ordered an inferno 3rd Gen and dealer is giving me very good $ for my trade in. I'm just a little worried it might be a step down to go from Tundra to Tacoma. Any opinions appreciated.

    2WD '05 Tundra to 4WD Tacoma I'd upgrade to a Tacoma.

4WD '05 Tundra 4.7 to a Tacoma 4WD of any year and model I'd have to be talked into that. The Tundra would have to be a POS.

Depends on what you want of course. I had a 2004 4x4 4.7L AC Tundra for a couple years and then upgraded to a 2009 5.7L 4x4 CrewMax Tundra for 4 more years and loved it. Once I hit 100K I decided to downsize for the first time since I wasn't towing as much (very rare now) and didn't absolutely need the extra cab space and couldn't fit in the garage where I moved to. Thus the '16 Tacoma.

I do really miss the power of the V8 but not the gas milage (14.7 MPG combined avg). The Tacoma is much easier to park and live with than my Tundra was. It's not much different in size to the 1st gen though. I've got a coworker with a 2002 Tundra and when I park next to him it's nearly the same size. The Tacoma has a smaller bed though and is still a bit more maneuverable.

The 12 year difference in technology and ride plus general wear and tear on the vehicle is going to be significant though.

I went from a 2012 Tundra TRD with the rock warrior package to a 2016 TRD OR with the m/t. They are both great trucks but the taco suits my needs much better. It was a step up for me.

    I test drove a 2016 tundra double cab, 5.7L 4x4 last night . 8 feet bed
    6 passenger seating

    Power was great
    Ride smooth
And value /$ it was so much cheaper then Tacoma

I bought an 06 gen1 4dr tundra limited a year ago. Equivalent 06 sr5 tacos were like $5k more. I dont get it. Tundra is twice the truck a taco is.
My buddy has a 2011 acess cab taco. We travelled same 2 hour route, both with snowmobiles in the truck. My tundra had extra 500lb of cargo and I used 5 litres more fuel. Still like tacos but refuse to pay the cult price.

Where are you getting lower prices on tundras than the tacomas? Seems highly unlikely if both are new.

I think he was referring to value for the money but is full of it.... the Tundra is 10k more and paying for the value(i.e. V-8)

I am not saying Tundra is better than Tacoma. I am a Tacoma owner. I am looking to upgrade my 8 year old Tacoma to a 2016/2017 OR 4x4 6MT or a TRD Pro 6MT. Tacoma fits my needs. However, not being able to find any locally yet to test drive, I drove a Tundra.

Tacoma packages are limited. For example I can't get a stripper 4x4, DC, 6MT V6.

Tundra 8 feet bed (I need bed space) with 5.7 V8 4x4, stripper is cheaper than what my Tacoma would be by about $2500. Either due to more Tundra incentives or what not. Just quotes from two local dealers in person.

Thus I was seeing VALUE (to me) as a truck, $/value ratio, I feel Tundra was giving more back for the buck.

    That is all.

I am not knocking either truck. Different tools for different needs.

I'm not saying you're knocking any truck. I'm asking where is this dealership where a tundra is cheaper than tacomas? I'd be interested in a tundra if this is true.

Hamer Toyota & Longo Toyota MSRP is $35169 for the Tundra above. After discount, they have it at $30,000 for me.

Tacoma will be MSRP $35980, TRD OR 4x4 6MT, no discounts.

It isn't an apples to apples comparison. But this a real world comparison in my market, for my own needs.

I wouldn't be surprised. My Tacoma cost more than my Tundra did, though it was a different year and time. Apples to oranges a bit.

    *Invoice price
2004 Toyota Tundra 4x4 4.7L Access Cab with TRD package: $31,194
2009 Toyota Tundra 4x4 5.7L CrewMax with Rock Warrior package: $35,132
    2016 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 3.5L DCSB TRD Sport: $35,480

Part of me wants my Tundra back, but the size was a bit prohibitive and I didn't use the full capabilities of it anymore. I may go back in some number of years depending where I'm at in life. But for now the Tacoma is a great fit (literally, it fits in the garage).

Ahhh, I get it. You can always get a SR5 4x4. You are comparing a Tundra base 4x4 to a Tacoma TRDOR. You need to compare it to a Tundra TRDOR.

05 Tundra is almost the same size as the 16 Tacoma. Losing a little on payload and towing from the v8 but not by much. You wont miss it.

Both are good trucks. Buy the one that suits your needs best. Price factors into any purchase, but since I was buying new the Tacoma was about $10k less than a similar equipped Tundra for me. Since I wanted something smaller for the places I go, and I don't need the towing capacity of a full-size, this means the mid-size fits my needs better. Plus, manual transmission
