Like the title says my X Runner was running fine and I have checked every fuse and relay. Pulled and tested the starter. Pulled and tested the neutral safety switch and ignition all are fine. Here's the kicker battery is a newer optima yellow top (has full power). I turn the power on and it has power, but when I try to turn the motor over there is nothing. All grounds are good. Is there something I'm missing or something you guys have run into that I can't find. It was running fine last week.

    Thanks!

Take a few deep breaths and try to be a little more clear on what is and is not working.
Is the starter turning the motor over? doesn't sound like it but I can not tell from what you have posted
Or is it turning over but not actually starting?

Based on symptoms as described, starter relay/solenoid.

Also, check that the inside of the battery terminal clamps aren't corroded. I had that issue on my 1st gen. Had to jump it all day until I realized how caked the inside of the clamps were and spent some quality time with a screw driver.

There was a new clamp put on the negative terminal last fall and the solenoid to the starter is fine.

I appreciate the input. I described all this to my toyota service tech (buddy) and they are just as baffled. I'm at the point of possibly ripping apart the harness to see if there is wire housing issues

Fuel pump issues? It is an older vehicle. Although tacomas aren't known to have fuel pump issues, it can still be something to troubleshoot.

    Yes
I'd be willing to bet that you have a problem with the immobilizer system, happened to a friend recently.

It sounds like you have a no crank issue. Or does it crank but fail to start the engine?

Assuming it’s a no crank, chances are good it’s your starter solenoid internal contacts. Optima isn’t what it used to be so I’d look there first because it’s easier. My multimeter has a peak hi & low feature, not all do. Or if you have a old analog dial volt meter it’ll work. Hook to your battery terminals, try to start, your looking for what the voltage drops to at it’s lowest. Starter voltage drop test. 10.2-10.5 is considered ok, lower than that the battery is kaput. Engine off you should have 12.5 or higher. Engine running you should see around 14.2, 13.5 is a little weak, more that 14.7 is overcharging.

On mine, I did away with the clutch switch deal, removed the relay & put in a bypass wire, my switch was bad and I hated having to stomp the clutch to start, lazy. Also, I get an occasional no crank. I’m planning to do the denso solenoid rebuild kit soon.

Waasheem-I have done all this already, but thank you for the input. The battery and solenoid and it's contacts are fine as well. I'm honestly resorting to the harness at this point.

You could try bypassing the clutch switch. At the switch would work to test, at the relay would be better if you want to leave it in.

My switch tested bad so maybe yours is too.

You could also try holding the key to crank and stomping the clutch up and down.

Before you start ripping your wiring harness apart, I would check to see if you have power at the starter motor battery cable and the trigger wire while cranking. If you do not, get a wiring diagram for your vehicle and start checking for proper power and grounds starting from the trigger wire back to the ignition switch. I would also check every under hood fuse and under dash fuse with a test light to make sure they are all good.

    I agree.
Check for power at the appropriate places.

My girlfriend had a corolla that would do the same thing - randomly not start
    Drove me crazy
The previous owner had replaced one of the batter terminals with an aftermarket aluminum one
I switch that over to a Toyota type (steel) and never had problem again
Not sure why but for some reason the replacement didn’t alway allow current

Hmmm I believe I replaced the clamp with steel, but I'll double check tomorrow. I really hope that is the problem lol

So are you getting power at the little trigger wire in the crank position or not?

OP says he checked everything, but not giving us much information to go on.

How did you check the starter contacts? (the only reliable way to check these is by opening up the solenoid and looking)
Is there a single small click then nothing?
Is there voltage at the battery connector at the starter?
Does the voltage drop when trying to crank at the starter connector?
Is there voltage at the Solenoid Coil Wire when trying to start?
