06' alternator repair or replace?

    2006 Tacoma Trd 4x4 access cab
    Hey, so I'm continuing my journey to get my 2006 v6 4L Trd w/ towing package back up and running after it sat for 5 years.
    My previous posts were about getting the gas out and firing it up which I did. phase 1 complete.

    Phase 2- After firing it up it ran but smelled burning rubber so shut down. Belt was hot and white haze in the air. Learned to take off serpent belt and check. All expected to pulleys spun except alternator.

    ? is there a way to jam THE ALTERNATOR with used motor oil like I've seen on the u tub and WORK IT FREE before I try replacing it?

    Short answer. - Don’t do it. You need an alternator.

    Just because it can be done, doesn’t mean you should.
    You’re pouring good oil on a bad alternator.
    Don’t waste your time or money.

    FWIW, there is just about as much bad advice on YouTube, as there is good advice.
    I’m not sure I’d place “pouring oil on an alternator” under the “good advice” category.

    ....Yyyeeaahhhhh don't give your alternator a used oil bath. Oil isn't gonna magically fix a mangled bearing. You may be able to work it free but it'll just lock up again, probably worse, very quickly. And then you'll want to buy a new one, only having an oil-soaked core to return, if they accept it.

    Not to mention the likely hazard of something(like a bad bearing) getting hot enough in your failing alternator to ignite the gobs of oil stuck inside, and turning it into a rather exciting tiki torch under your hood.

    If you really don't want to buy a new alt, it's probably fairly easy to take this one apart and remove/replace just the bearings. Otherwise just take the core you have and buy a new, warrantied one.

    Truth. Last time I was in a hurry and followed Youtube advice, I bent the dogshit out of my control arms trying to press the bushings out with a bottle jack between the mounting ears. I didn't want to wait for access to the right tools and had an alignment appt coming up, so it seemed like a genius solution at the time. Figured "Mehhh, I'm sure these arms are plenty strong enough to take the force, they carry the whole truck after all..."Lesson learned, the hard way.
