Just bought an 06 tacoma access cab 5 speed 4wd new frame and many new parts for $3300. Kinda feel like I hit the lottery. It has 133000 miles she's a little rough but definitely worth it. Its leaking a little oil from the drain pan plug and it looks like someone tried to permatext it. How hard is it to move the differential and axles to replace the pan or do I just get a rubber plug and call it good. Any insight would be appreciated.

Looks like a nice ride, I would fix it the right way no rubber plug.
If they stripped head, bring it to a shop have them weld like a nut on it and then take it off a lot of guys around here use the Lexus oil pan, drain plug, which is a lot more user-friendly

Head looks ok, I think the threads are stripped and they did something with liquid gasket. I'm afraid to remove it with out having some way to repair it. I have another vehicle I can drive if it takes longer than anticipated.

Or you can get a Fumoto valve and it install it with some sort of epoxy or other good sealer.

That looks interesting, but I'd be afraid of metal shavings in the case.

Mr C uses Time Serts. Look up his utube video. Keyword: How To Repair Stripped Out Drain Plug Threads, by South Main Auto.

I'd pick up a rubber plug for starters. That will allow you to open things up, see what you are dealing with, plug it up and refill so you can use it until you're ready to repair in another way.

I had one in son's college beater for a couple of years, no issues.

If time sert, makes em, they’re going to be good. I have a m16 2.0 kit that is of very high quality, better than the spring type insert helicoil has.

This was the drain pan washer with blue RTV around the hole. Swapped the plug and washer. Can't be any worse. That was done by a shop he never did anything to the truck. I'm a hack but Jesus its a $2 part.
