I have 06 Tacoma 183000 miles on it. Auto tranny, runs awesome, compression check was all 175 on all cylinders, tranny shifts perfect BUT I drove down 4x4 on the river bar, lots of little rocks, not much sand if any at all. So I got home and was listening to my infamous Taco valve tick just because, so in nuetral or any gear it sounded like marbles or something was in my tranny or somewhere around it, let it cool down for 5 minutes, started it up and it wasn't doing it, letting it cool now and gonna go shake some heat shealds and skid plates to see if thats what it is. Please help guys. Thanks.

Ok so I let it cool down, checked transfer case bolts all heat shields, started it up, it is not making that noise any more at all, so weird. I tried all gears in 4x4 and 4x4l and 2w drive. Sounds great. What a trip. I did notice as I was under the truck on the passenger side I can hear a consistent "buzzzzz" or something like that at the tranny near the two bolts that have metal brake line looking things leading up from it but you really have to try hard to hear it. It just ticks at the valves like all toyotas. What do you all think?

Just drove it again, the noise is gone, so basically this noise lasted about 30 seconds and has disapeared like it never happened...any thoughts at all?

I would really like to know about this. 41 people not having any clue is kinda scary. I guess I will just keep an eye on it.

I'm pretty sure I hear this all the time. The Windows have to be down but I'll hear it intermittently, but the majority of the time I hear is right after I put in it reverse or drive and start to roll out out of my driveway. You nailed it with the marbles reference, I always said it sounded kind of like an old school bell kinda rattling.

Well its just weird that it only happened for a very shot amount of time and I drove it twice since today, all over town and it didnt make that noise again. Could it have been a rock somewhere rattling around? It is mind boggling to me, in all cases auto mechanics wise something like that would keep on lingering and get worse, not just happen and go away, never to return (hopefully)

Could be rocks in there..Go park the truck against a wall like your in a drivethru and cycle the truck from park to drive and to reverse, go back and forth rolling without touching the gas and see if you can hear it again.

Ive been trying to figure out a similar noise on my 06. Started off like you described and now it does it anytime in lightly into the throttle at around 1100rpm. Mine sounds like its coming from the right front of the engine bay but still cant figure it out. Took off almost all of my rusty heat shields and its still there. Would be super interested if anyone has found a cure for this too:help:

Could be a catalytic converter honeycomb that has failed.

Ya its not doing it anymore..cat comb makes sense. It did sound like coming from bell housing but if it was, in my opinion something would still be wrong, wouldn't just do it for a second then not at all anymore. I hope to god this doesn't come back. I just paid 20gs for this truck, its an awesome really nice truck, my first one. I've always drove around crappy rigs..this truck is the bomb.

Welllll.....just drove to down and low and be hold the noise is back. Under acceleration in D, 4, 3..all gears..only audible if window is down and it stops at around 2300-3400 rpms but if I stick it in neutral and rev it up to 4000 or higher I can hear it as well..so light rev in neutral i can hear it mid range sounds good higher rpms can here it as well. Don't have any experience working on toyotas but to me it sounds like a tinny sound something loose or something. Truck runs great and auto tranny shifts great with and without the noise so what do I do? I have only owned this truck for 45 days, no warranty but the dealer ship is cool and they said bring it in tomorrow. I just hope I can recreate it at the dealer ship. Did just inherit an 06 Triumph 1050 Speed Tripple thats all tricked out so at least I have a back up vehicle to drive if it is something bad. ANY SUGGESTIONS??

So it makes the sound with vehicle stopped and engine revved up?

Yes. Its an auto tranny. 06 4.0 litre Taco. Runs great, a lot of power, tranny shifts great, but if it is stopped in neutral if I just give it a little rev you can hear like a rattle, sounds like a tin pie pan rattling around down there or marbles bouncing around..

Hey I have an 06 and something similar happened to me. I could hear an ugly rattle at low rpm then it kick on again at high rpm I narrowed it down to a heat shield around my exahust. I put a hose clamp around the heat shield and the exahust and made them one. Just something you might want to look at first.
