I just got a VSS at Napa for $72. It did not fix my problem, I had all similar symptoms as you, now my ABS light is on after 80 miles. It's really easy to change out the VSS, 10mm wrench, but let the truck cool down and the Tranny will be hot and the exhaust is hot too. Make sure you put a little tranny fluid on the new sensor before installing.

I dropped my new ABS sensor in the right front axle and took it for a test drive, seemed fine until the everything lit up again and shit stopped working, so I came home, made sure all tire presseure is correct and disconnected the neg from the battery for 10 mins and then took it down the road for some 30 mph hard braking tests and that seemed to turn off the lights and bring everything back to normal, so far.........

have you check the wire harness under the bed (the one that plug on the diff and the ABS sensor) ?? mine did something like that i had no speed ,traction control ... and that was a faulty connector

I'll check that I think it might be the problem since I've had a lot of snow under there

It's not fed from the abs sensors at the wheels?

Have you found a solution? I've been screwing with all this for 6 months now and I'm fed up. Changed battery, alternator, both vss, still same issue. No speedo or odo, and the gas guage is fluctuating. Please help.

I haven't yet, I've been out of town for work the last few months and haven't had a chance.

Did you check your grounds? High (>.5 VDC) alternator ripple (from open diodes) can also cause weird problems.

x 2, but you also might check the AC ripple from your alternator from open diodes. Bad grounds and high ripple can cause really strange problems with the electrical/electronics systems.

Not 100% on the Tacoma but with my Dakota the same issues happened when the speed/position sensor in the rear diff went bad. The spedo and odo wouldn't register, gas wouldn't change, and on occasion it would actually cause the truck to cut off while making sharp turns.. craziness. Once I replaced the sensor all was well. This may help it may not.. best of luck to you.

It will be your ABS speed sensors. I have/had the same problem with my 2006 SR5 truck. The speedometer computer talks to your ABS computer. You need at least 2 functioning sensors for it to give a reading so your speedometer registers. They are located just by the brakes all round and unless someone was nice and kept em clean, they will be a PITA to change.

The amount of dirt mine accumulated over the years made it so I have to pop the bearings and such out and hammer the broken sensor from the inside of the hubs. If you run your truck to a Yota dealer they will confirm this with their fancy computer that can check each sensor individually. You can test each sensor individually if you put your truck up on blocks and get an ohm meter, set it on the leads of the sensor and spin the wheel. It should pulse on your meter as the tire rotates.

So, if your sensors are good, its the connecting wires themselves. One giant headache! You can do what Wyatt did... because yours is an 06, you have the older Transfer case which has just a plug in place on your T case where a speed reader would go. Get an old reader, put on the... 28 tooth gear ((dont quote me on that)) then hard wire it to your sleedo. It will read, but you dont get ABS (who really needs this?) and you wont get your cruise control.

Also yes, with the ABS sensors not working, it will make your E brake light kick on as well as your CEL. AS for your fuel tank, I believe its just a bad wire. Im still narrowing that one down myself but have the identical problem lol.... truck will be empty, fill it, needle doesnt jump to full but slowly slides up as if im filling up as i drive lol

    Best of luck!

Had to reset my ABS computer, that's all! After I replaced a sensor, so now I have two functioning, as I've had for MONTHS NOW! but ABS reset, after scowering the internet for months, and testing wires and all kinds of things... what a PITA!
