06 trd, with 125K, other than recently replaced differential, has been running fine. Setting in driveway, turned ignition on, strong engine turn over, low fuel lite on and fuel gauge doesn't move from empty; tank is 3/4 full. EFI fuses 1&2 checked OK, battery is ~1 yr old. I removed gas cap and tried starting, engine fired then quit, back to original problem with no engine firing.

Forum indicators point check to EFI and fuel pump relays, I found them but how do you check them out? Any other possibilities? Thank you in advance for your help. Marshall

Tank is 3/4 full but low fuel light is on? Have you had gauge issues before this or did you sleep drive for about 235 miles?

    (a) Check the resistance.
    (1) Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminals.

If the result is not as specified, replace the fuel pump relay.

Drivesector thanks for the quick followup and the diagram of the fuel pump relay. How do you get the relay off the block connection? Do you just pull up on the relay itself or is there a locking mechanism? I will check it in the am. Thanks again for the help, I checked the mileage it only has 98 miles on the tank.

Thanks Drivesector for the follow up. Today my wife said she thought the engine wasn't turning as fast as it was. I pulled the battery and saw that it was installed in 1/09, even though the voltage seemed OK with a multimeter, I went to Battery One. The battery checked OK thought was it at 68% of charge because of my trying to start after putting 2 1/2 gallons of gas in the tank, another suggestion from a radio auto help show. I got home with a the new battery and it won't fit. The new battery is too tall and in Toyota's wisdom, only one side of the battery clamp can be adjusted. I'll need to go back to Battery One and see what can be done about the battery. As to your suggestion about the scan codes, I checked the prices of the device and at my age of 75 I don't see how I can justify it. I think we still belong to AAA so Monday I'll call and have it towed to a garage.
I haven't posted or started a thread before so I was at a loss as to how all of this forum stuff works.
I thank you very much for your help and patience.

a couple possibilities. The first is the key, are you using a copy, the keys should have a chip in them, if the copy does not it will not start, only turn over. Second if the fuel pump cutoff switch. This usually activates during an accident, but it's possible it can do it on it's own. I believe it is located inside the glove box. The last would be the connector going to the sending unit on the tank. This one would explain why it shows you're on empty. Might just be a bad connection, if you can reach it take it off and put it back on. I believe it is on the top of the tank though, so the bed might be in the way. Good luck, and let us know if you get it working.

To Drivesector and 2008Taco, thanks for all your help. I had my truck towed to the local Toyota dealer. $950 later, they repaired several wires to the connector on top of the gas tank; vermin damage. Two hours later, I was rear-ended. With 125K miles, over 7 years old and with the rear frame bent, it is likely to be totaled. Anyway it has been an interesting summer.
