Can anyone explain how to replace shift solenoids?
I recently bought a '07 Tacoma 4x4 4.0L 6cyl with 220k. The frame and much of the chassis is brand new due to a recall. Unfortunately, im having what feels like a transmission problem. The truck shifts rough between 1st-3rd when its cold but not consistently. Im seeing code P0986 - Shift Solenoid 'E' Control Circuit High.
Ive found a thread that explains a similar situation to what im experiencing.

Thanks for the info. I bought the truck a few weeks ago from a used car lot. I was told it had one previous owner. He sold it to the lot after the frame was replaced. Im not sure of the cars maintenance history but im looking into it. The lot assured me they only sell vehicles that have been repaired to a working condition. During the test drive i was unable to find any issues with the transmission. Drove the truck for a week not noticing any issues. The rough shifting occured near the end of a 50 mile highway drive. When i started slowing down for traffic the truck leapt forward after downshifing to first. It then continued to slip and shift erratically till i parked. Up until that point i never felt any irregularities in the transmission. I removed the overfill plug the other day and about a quart of fluid drained out.. didnt look too dirty and i didnt notice any metal shavings. Afterward i took 'er for a short drive i couldnt get the rough shifting to happen again.. till last night when i was driving home in cold weather.. same rough shifting 1-3.. this time it wouldnt shift above 3rd. I plan on completely draining the fluid tomorrow to inspect further. All your advice is much appreciated.

These transmissions need to be checked with the engine running and the transmission needs to be between 110 - 115 degrees before you pull the overflow plug out . If you pull the overflow plug out without the engine running , you will get all kinds of transmission fluid poring out the overflow . I am not sure if you are aware of this or not but here is an excellent write up on how to check your trans fluid properly
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/how-to-drain-refill-automatic-transmission.63851/.

Because you purchased the truck a few weeks ago , I would take it back and complain that there is an issue with the transmission .
There should be a minimum 90 day warranty on your truck . Check the fine print on your sales slip.

Considering the higher mileage on the truck . I suggest having the seller pay for the transmission problem rather than you paying out of pocket . A rebuilt A750E transmission is $3500 bucks from Toyota and that does not cover the labor to remove and replace it

What do you think about using the temp from an ultragauge or scan gauge to check the fluid level rather than putting the truck in temp check mode? I have my ultra gauge setup to read pan and tc temps.
