Some shit I got on craigslist
Hello there. I have had my 07 TRD OR for a few years now and noticed a problem shifting about 9 months ago and it is getting worse. I find that when shifting from 4th to 5th (auto trans) the truck seems to hang out in 4th gear until around 2500+ RPM before reluctantly dropping into 5th. I found that if I knock the shifter to the left and then back into D it will immediately change gears. Problem happens mostly on slight inclines, like merging onto the highway, and getting into highway speeds. Seems to lessen after driving for a period of time.

This problem is probably contributing to my bad gas mileage (275 mi/tank) and is potentially effected by some codes I've thrown for a little while as well. My check engine light came on not too long ago and when I ran the codes I got 1-2 bus 02 sensor problems. Since then I have cleaned the MAF and throttle body, changed the plugs and the battery, but still get the check engine light.

Do you think that the 02 sensors are bad and are contributing to my shifting problems (trying to warm up the engine by staying in OD)? Or are the two problems unrelated. Either way, I'd love to figure this out soon. Thanks for reading through this.

/disclaimer: I have not been as proactive about this as I should have been, and the problem is likely getting worse due to my negligence.

Lifted? Big tires? I've driven two tacomas with stock gears and 35s that don't like shifting into 5th unless on a flat road.

I have the exact same problem. I did a tranny flush at 60,000 but still have the issue.I can go over 3,000 rpm let off and still will not shift until I bounce back to 4th and then into overdrive. Shifts immediately. I thought I was the only one.

I have like 72K or something. Not many, definitely <80K

Im have 5100's and 255/75 BFG muds. I'm pretty sure I had the problem though before I threw the bigger tires on, just not as bad. Seems to be getting worse as time goes on.

Yeah dude. Exactly the same as me.

I have the ultra gauge and until last night(go figure) no codes. Last night I got a pending code P0705 which is Transmission range sensor. I cleared it and nothing since. I think this means a break in communications from the shifter to the TCU. But that is the first and only time I got that. It was also a pending code and did not turn on the CEL. It's about 5 degrees out so that may have something to do with the code. Like the OP, the longer you drive the less it happens.
    Weird.

I'll help, but please provide a bit more details in your post. Engine model, transmission model, stock wheel and tires? stock gears? any performance mods? What are the CURRENT codes in the PCM?

It's a TRD, so it comes with the 4.0l engine, not sure about the trans (auto) in an earlier post I specified that I have bilstein 5100's and 255/75 tires; stock gears. Only perf mods are the magnaflow muffler. I'll run the codes again but I'm pretty sure was flashing P0130, P0133. I'll run them again this weekend. I dont have a guage, so I have to go to vato-zone.

Sounds to me like the issue is a valve hanging up in the valve body . The problem is temperature sensitive and diminishes as the transmission gets warmer .
I would suspect a hung spool valve inside the valve body casting that eventually frees up as the alluminum warms up and expands allowing the spool valve stroke .

When was your last transmission service ?

Not to hi jack the thread OP but I have the same year and model as the OP and the same problem. Had the tranny flushed about 2,000 miles ago and still have the issue. 61,000 on the truck now.

Yeah not sure why or it may have just been electronically not letting the transmission shift, it would go bout 800 rpms higher before shifting into 5th then usual

OK, sounds like you just have a strange truck. I can't see anything in the wiring system, fuses , or power/ground distribution that a bad tail light would have any effect on a transmission shifting....sounds like a gremlin you had there.

Pulled it all out it ended up being the stock wiring with leds in it so just replaced the sockets with led rated ones
