So im new to this site but not new to taco's. I really thought this was interesting when this guy came into my shop today.( I am a full time mechanic at my dads shop. Since i was born) He said he had a slight vibration. So I took the truck down the road and once I shifted into second gear ahhhhh the whole truck vibrated me dizzy. It was horrible. So I drove on the lift and found this!

The joint had almost ate right through the yoke.

I just thought this was interesting since I dont normally see it get this bad.

Oh and just to top it off this 07 tacoma prerunner reg cab had 131,000 miles on it and the owner has only changed the oil 4 times and its still running strong. I changed it the 4th time. damn people and horrible maintenance .

wow, that's pretty ridiculous. Is it lifted? 3 oil changes in 131,000 miles, I bet the engine is going to implode like that u-joint before long.

Yeah I was shocked. specially cause I just got my new one a few months ago. It was depressing to see someone abuse it like that. When i took the oil filter off it was just sludge clumps. But I also was thinking DAMN. Only a toyota would last through this kind of abuse. It seemed to run smooth except for it needing a fuel filter since it starts a little hard. It is bone stock.

Lack of maintenance (grease) It gets dry and then starts to wear out the needle bearings. then eats everything else away. but he was driving it with that vibration for many many miles.

^wow, that's one to hang on the wall. I saw a camaro that almost did that a few years back. Freakin amazing.

I thought the 2nd gens didn't have fuel filters, did they finally add one in 07?

They have one bolted to the frame near the middle drivers side of the rail.

Oh an yes that is defiantly going on the wall of shame!

If anyone in the local houston area wants that drive shaft I removed from that 07 taco prerunner I still have it in the scrap metal pile. The only thing damaged is the yoke and the one joint. It is the whole shaft from the trans. to the diff. Including the carrier bearing. I just figured I would just throw out the offer before I take it for scrap. You can't beat FREE!

The new driveshaft recall sheds some light on this thread.

No it doesn't. The driveshaft recall is for 2010s with cracked/weak yokes on the front driveshaft. That has nothing to do with a failure due to lack of maintenance as seen in this thread.

This thread sheds light on how important it is to maintain your vehicle. My '07 has 12,500 miles and I've changed the oil more than that guy. And the rotors on that tahoe is just ridiculous!
