    Hey Fam!

I've done some diagnosing and I'm pretty sure my 08's clockspring has worn down. The cruise control lever works when wheel is firmly to the left but at no other time. While a lot of VERY similar VINs are in the recall group, mine is not.

Has anyone had success convincing Toyota / their dealer to honor the recall clockspring replacement despite being outside the VIN range? It seems awfully suspicious that it's failing in exactly the same way as covered models.

    Thanks
    J

It's a wearable item, I've seen them reject even after the recalled spiral cable breaks with wear.

The recall is determined to be a defect at the time, yours lasted till now.

    Hey Bishop

I recognize that! It was never replaced under recall because it wasn't part of the recall VIN list. Nevertheless it seems to be a common problem and perhaps unfairly excluded. I'm specifically curious if anyone has been able to get a recall repair outside of VIN range.

    My vin last 7 are
    Z566668
    While recall range is
    Z592710 - Z625899

So I'd bet a dollar or two that the same or a very similar issue has caused it to wear in a similar pattern to the recalled items.

I work at a dealer, the only time there are exceptions is near end of warranty dates. So around 5-6 years from purchase.

An example 05-11 Tacos got leaf spring recalls, and even if a 2012 broke a spring (which they did), they had to pay out of pocket, even though it was the same defect.

Out of the VIN ranges means not applicable. The systems populate when the work order is created. It's about liability. If a dealer pushed it through, they would end up paying out of their own pocket.
