Klown had a build date in Jan. like me I think. Your's bought in April probably has a later build date. That's part of the equation that seems to vary. Where in the production year on the 08's did this beefy 3 leaf pack supposedly come onto the line?

Not true- You need to look at the part number. I have the F series springs- They are a three pack and I have had no issues. They can be bent and tempered differently to change spring coefficients- with three leaf pack.

I have the F springs in my 08 TRD 4x4 and I have had a 1000 lbs of trailer behind it and I've loaded my 400lbs sportbike + a weekend worth of track tools/gear/clothes. I've hard no issues.

4x4x4trd-You got lucky- I did the same thing and they told me to pound sand. I called Customer Experience and told them about it so it's annotated to my file if anything should ever happen I've got something on file already.

I just got a Canadian Spec '09 Access cab two weeks ago. There are three leafs, should I have four? Does the TSB effect 2009 Access cabs?

I'd assume a 2009 would already have the TSB incorporated into its build...

Your guess on the 3 leafs is as good as ours?

Yes, I feel I did get lucky getting it performed on my truck.

But if yours and Klowns is not a problem who cares? I'll never know either way now.

The TSB doesn't cover the '09's that I have heard. The # of leaves isn't the important part- It's the strength of the springs that are there.

You are prolly good to go with the 3 pack.

Yeah...I'm not worried about getting it done- if the truck bottoms out I'll be at the stealership the next chance I get to raise a racket and get it fixed.
And you went at it right way- being safe then sorry is better.

That's the deal as the TSB doesn't officially cover the '08's either. If you don't have issues with bottoming out with a load maybe it is indeed solved. Hopefully so.

Welcome to TW. Let the mods. begin!!! ;)

OK let me ask this question then, I'm sure the answer is in here, but lemme ask anyways:

Has anybody with something rather then the longbed DC had any bottoming out issues?

If so, please state your year and trim/style (TRD sport etc... 4x4)

    My situation:

No problem, 08, short bed DC, TRD sport 4x4

I really am starting to think that it's a short bed vs long bed issue.

I guess I had the old springs then because my truck used to bottom out like crazy. I was unaware that Toyota changed the rear leaf springs after the 2007 model year.

I had the old springs in my longbed feb 08 build. Much better now, I don't remember the letter though. But the 4 is better than the 3 in my opinion any day of the week.

I CALL B.S. on the springs being different. Tempering or heat treatment will NOT change a spring rate. Only geometry does that.

Some pre-08 guys got the TSB (incl me) and they're happy. Some pre-08 guys didn't get the TSB and they're happy. Some 08 guys have got the TSB and they're happy. You don't want the TSB and you're happy.

So be happy, but don't drag yer psuedo-technical solid mechanics BS in here. Spring rate is a function of material and geometry. Period. Hardening affects yield strength, but not modulus. Rev G is not a different spring.

    grumble.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------
I think the single letter code signifies the model year, somewhat; Jeep/Chrysler does this, and has for years on some parts. Example: TJ series headlamp bezel, other than the first partial year where the were metal; they have been plastic. The first suffix was an AA, then an AB, then AC, all on the same part without changes, and this continues with a new suffix every year, and after 4-5 years the old suffixes consolidate into one common suffix on older models while newer models continue to get a new suffix every year, and all newer suffixes are higher priced; why? because insurance is the most likely source for the money. Looking over some jeep parts books for a while showed almost all collision parts were this way; most items got a new suffix just about every year, along with a price increase. Ford, if they do this I can't say, most of the suffixes do signify a different part and the second and third number of the suffix shows a modification to the original specification, but lots of misc parts that were shared on older Lincolns, as well as Full size Ford cars got different part numbers at a higher price, even though the Hollander Interchange numbers were the same. The friend I had at the Jeep dealer stated that the parts people sometimes ignored the suffixes, but were told to adhere to the proper suffixes for two reasons, prices not matching, and in some cases the suffixes DO signify a different part. The fact that the suffix on the Tacoma springs changes almost yearly, seems to show that it somewhat lines up with model year changes. The only way I think the 3 spring pack is now correct for the job is if the vendor was shipping sub standard parts that did not meet the design specs, and later corrected it. I do not myself think that is the case, the 3leaf pack did the job, but just barley, and variances in the way people load the trucks is the reason some have no problem and other seem to be on the bump stops all the time.

So far it looks like the only guys with problems are the guys with DC long beds. I would imagine that those springs have a different geometry or at least are loaded differently then the short beds.

Well I guess my thread got a lot more complicated afterall.

What is the weight that most guys are hitting on the bump stops? The other question is why are there some guys with 08s and F springs? It looks like it didn't change until around March 08. Like I said, I did have approx 750 lbs in there with two guys jumping in tandem to get a good bounce going and it didn't hit the stop. Should that be enough to do it in anyone else's experience?

I have an 07 QC short bed. Though I didnt have issues hitting the bump stops, the ride was horrible. I mentioned it to the dealer, and they did the TSB. :)

I'm not scientific, but I can give facts. My dad is working on an invention that involves a steel coil spring. Can't say more about that, but I can tell you what he found.
He took a 150ft. coiled steel spring, wound it up and let it disengage. After about 6 windings it wouldn't unwind itself. It was 0 Rockwell.
He took it out and had it heat treated to 50 Rockwell. He has wound and unwound it over 40 times. He has lost about 1 or 2 revolutions due to loss in tension. But still much better.
Heat treating did seem to affect the spring ability of this steel coil. Not out to disprove, just telling you what he found.
If I took this farther, this could answer why their is variance in everyones different results of same letters. Some have said the 'g' is ok while others have said they had problem. If the supplier was having problems or descrepancies with heat treat, then some people are having better luck than others.
Either way, my 08 w/ 120 miles is going to get the TSB, one way or another. I want the 4 pack. No one has said the 4-pack is a problem.

I have the 08 trd DC SB w/ the 3 leafs and i've had 800 lbs in the bed, the bed height only dropped 2 inches, i had an inch and a half before it hit the bump stop.

Im guessing its some what solved....so i think im good for now. Whats the capacity that its supposed to hold w/ out bottoming out?
