My rear diff after 198k miles is going out, the limited slip is making horrible popping noises when I turn at slow speeds left and right.
I located a 2012 totaled locally with 58k miles, non locker like mine that I could possibly get as a direct swap. Anyone know if there were any significant changes between the two that I should be aware of??

If it's an open diff it should bolt right in. Make sure the gear ratio is the same. I'm not positive if there was a difference between 4 and 6 cyl but I'm sure there is. IIRC It's an 8.4 open or 8.0 locker. So ultimately, match the ratio and you should be good to go.

I believe they went from a mechanical LSD to a brake actuated"limited slip" through abs. Not sure if that matters for bolting it up, but I'd assume if your 08 didn't have the electronics to support the brake actuated limited slip you'd essentially have a completely open diff. I could be wrong on the years they switched, look into it

This is why earlier Tacoma's (trd sport) needed the gear oil additive (lsd) and the newer ones didn't need the additive.

it should bolt right in, but you will loose the mechanical LSD with in your current diff.

You might look into just replacing the clutchpack / springs in your current diff.

That's what I was thinking. I know for a fact mine is mechanical. Wasn't so sure about the newer ones.

I'm pretty mechanically inclined. I own an equipment repair shop and work on light/have equipment for a living. Is this a job that can be done at home, or is it something highly recommended take to a professional? Saying the gears are ok, and all it will be is swapping clutches and bearings..
