that sounds retarted to me, why would toyota install the camera in the handle but not the mirror? I have a hard time believing that. They might all be pre-wired, but i highly doubt there would be a camera there with nothing to watch it on.

Interesting...I have it already, but the bigger mirror/screen is definitely desirable. The little one is hard to see much.

    Does Plasti-Dip count as a mod ?
My test drive was in one with the camera and mirror viewer. Very cool feature. Not something I've used before.
Gotta wonder though, if you're backing in somewhere with the gate down, the camera isn't of much use.

If you are unsure ... that a look at the tailgate handle. The latch will be two pieces. The left side to open the gate ... the right side is for the camera:

    See below:

It is a feature that at first I was thinking ... I'll never use this. Although I do not use it for backing (mirrors and the standard "Look over your shoulder" ... it is great to see how close you are to where you need to back ... as in looking at the parking space line or curb.

Now, if you back up with the tailgate open all you will see is the area where the gate meets the bed.

I hope that answers any questions.

When I bought my taco last month, I told the dealer never on earth would I use a back-up camera, since we have made it millions of years without... :p

I honestly thought it was something that is fun, but never useful. Have had the truck about 6 weeks now and I use it every single day. On my way in to work today, I parked in a spot I otherwise would not have and i was able to back right into it with accuracy like a dime.

I use it every single time i'm in reverse, and I plan on doing the hack that allows me to turn it on at will.

No camera on my '09 SR5. Just the two-part handle with a blank. I bought a camera from someone here on tacomaworld and the wiring was all there in the tailgate.

    Cheers.

I thought I'd never use mine either but it's great when backing up to hook up a trailer or in a tight spot. I haven't hit my trash cans at home yet :). Useless with the tailgate down though.

I like the back-up camera...it's perfect for backing into parking spaces.

One you get used to it...and used to judging the camera and the picture it gives you...it is an awesome tool.

Yes, it is small...but I prefer it in the mirror. My MDX had a large one in the nav screen, but I like it better in the mirror where my eyes are already.

    YMMV

sorry, but your wrong. guy at work has the camera installed in the tailgate but no mirror...he was asking me about it since he knows i know quite a bit about the tacos...

i've read a few others that have the same thing. i know it doesnt really make that much sense, but either its just easier to install them on all the trucks on the assembly line, or its there so that dealers can charge extra for the mirror upgrade?

Early 09s had the camera regardless of the model, My BASIC 09 regular cab had the camera but not the mirror. I bought the mirror online and I only had to plug it in to the wiring already in the truck.
