Just in case anyone else has this problem, i thought i would post about it here.
For a few weeks every time i started my truck, it would be in 4x4 despite the switch being in the H2 position. I would have to switch it to H4 then back to H2 to get it out.
Also during this period as i was driving, the 4x4 as well as the 4Lo light would flash fast on the dash. No audible tone, just the light. This would occur completely randomly.

This morning I was heading out to an appointment and the same thing, only the switching trick did not work. Already late, i bit the bullet and drove it 40 miles in 4x4 to and from my appointment, on a positive note, I didn't get stuck anywhere along the 5 freeway this morning. When i got home i tried everything. It went into 4lo fine but would not switch out of 4x4.
Eventually i took the 4wd switch out and found it wasnt "snapped" into place properly, i closed it and bingo.
The light went out i heard the familiar crunch of the gears disengaging and breathed a sigh of "yay i get to keep the money in my savings account just a little longer".

I hope this helps someone somewhere sometime.....
