Dude, I haven’t even started sanding! I read a lot of boat forums and sanding was THE main topic of hate. Without exceptional technique from the start of a project, you end up sanding...a lot. As you get better and better, you sand less. Same with welding...the better you are, the less grinding you do.

I really don’t want to spend my time insulating right now but it’s costing me so much time in simply ‘waiting’. I can get epoxy to cure but it takes a while. I have to be able to maintain 50f to paint. Period. No way I can do that now.

That’s the idea. I’m not even fussing over these boxes. It’s a quick job just to get a functional item. But they are coming together pretty darn well. I’m hoping the glass goes smoothly!

haha... I hate sanding with a passion... Im 28 and pretty sure my right shoulder is toast. Definitely true regarding the skill. Im currently in the process of restoring an early 90s ducati with glass fairings and there was probably 1000 spider cracks and each had to be chased with a dremel and re-filled. Im far from a skilled body man and Im already over it... Im in the same boat as you I bought some 50-60 degree "cold weather" paint and haven't been able to finish the project the average temps this time of year here are near 60 but we have had one day over 50 the last 3 weeks. This spring im ordering a large shed and setting it up as a paint booth with heater and vents etc.

I can't imagine trying to focus on a single project with the scope of this one

I was born and raised in Carson City. Would Love to move back to that area. Anyway, yeah, we’re getting what seems like unseasonably cold weather.

A motorcycle build is on my list! Thinking a BMW K100, Buell XB or KTM 690 Duke. We’ll see what I get up to in the coming years.

The timeline on this camper, when looking back, doesn’t even seem real. If I thought it was going to take this long I would likely have bought one and called it good. But I didn’t so here I am! Haha.

Carson / Minden / Gardnerville as im sure you know are nothing like they were 10-15 years ago, still great, but different. I guess the same goes for most places.

Those are three very different bikes. I have some experience with the bmw K bikes. They really are a crazy good value right now. They are some unbelievably reliable motors that make reasonable power for their weight. The bikes themselves are in that in between stage of not old enough to be classic, and not new enough to desireable for alot of folks. You can by a ~$1,500 k75, k100, or k1100 and do some maintenance and ride for 100k miles. I typically will do mild custom builds with them as in the current market thats where the value is for resale but honesty if your doing mileage they are amazing 100% stock. Here is a pic of the last one I did, haven't done one in about a year as I have been blown up with requests for their precursor the "airheads"

EDIT this one I actually painted Toyota "cement grey"

I left that area in 92...I’m a bit older than you are. Haha. I’ve beem back a few times over the years...yes MUCH different.

that’s a nice bike! Airhead values are high and I like the quirkiness of the K bikes (no K75 as the triple doesn’t quite have the visual balance and presence of the 100). Quirkiness is what I like about all the bikes I listed. Plus they all have good bones: distinctive engine for the K, interesting frame and swing arm on the duke and everything about a Buell Xb is cool/strange. Buell are tough because their value has flattened off at a decently high price and a lot of aftermarket parts aren’t available anymore...not that I would rely much on that for a custom build. Anyway, let’s take this discussion to the PMs. I have questions!

Yes - thank you for the diagram.

WOW!! I just found this thread and I have to admit, there is so much good information in here!
I've been day dreaming of making a camper on a flatbed for a while now. I hope I can make it work one day.

Random post topic: garage insulation and lighting.

    Started Saturday evening with this...
    FCD0EFF7-17A4-4E32-96F0-7D3964B8F340.jpg

    Ended Sunday evening with this...
    22EAFE04-7AB4-4EF3-9E5E-5A017157EB58.jpg

Fully insulated ceiling (except right above the garage door...I’ll glue in rigid foam there). And I added 6 new light fixtures! Figured I might as well since i was up there. One of the fixtures had a completely smashed cover when I opened it so I took it back. I’ll install that fixture and wire up the last theee lights tonight. Will be ready to get back on the camper tomorrow...with a heated and well lit space!!

    Thanks!

    A couple questions:

    1. how do you like the flatbed from UTE LTD?
    2. Where did you get the alu boxes made?

    1. LOVE the Ute bed. You can’t beat it in the bang for the buck category. It’s basic and no frills but it’s inexpensive, light, and easy to live with. Really dig the fold down and removable sides. I find myself putting them on and taking them off on a whim based on what I’m carrying as well as how I’m feeling that day. Haha, it’s like changing an outfit.
    2. The boxes were made by Pro-Tech to my specs. One of their main facilities is right in the town I live in...not that it matters. They are easy to work with and they make really top notch stuff. Not cheap though. I looked at getting a flatbed through them but the price was ungodly high.

I need to do this so bad in my garage, but I gotta pull down all the crappily installed sheetrock first. I can see between the sheets and where the garage door opener rail is they just ripped pieces out till they could fit the rail higher. ITS BAD. Insulation mostly since the vent runner goes through the middle of the garage and loses all it's heat by the time it gets the the rooms above it. Blows cold air on my feet at my desk, and cold in the master bedroom, right by the bed...

Sounds like a bit of a project! It’s a lot easier to add then to clean up. Feel free to use the forum to ask questions on how to approach something. Plenty of smart(ass) folks on here that are dying to “help”. :smack:

Lights are done! Insulation is as done as it’s getting for now.

You can barely see it but I put 2” foam insulation in this strange spot by the garage door. Eventually I’ll put another layer of foam on the ceiling then cover it all with OSB. Don’t need to do that until I take on a big welding/grinding job...such as making new sliders this summer.
