Thanks a bunch man, that gives a decent visual how high mine will sit since I made the canopy 36" tall. I think I have a similar set of tail lights coming, going to swap it for something LED like this

Super excited to see what you come up with, thats a huge amount of room to work with now vs the factory bed

Yeah, not sure if these taillights will be the final solution but I have them so they'll work to get me rolling again.

    Getting there:

    IMG_4987.jpg
Figuring out all of the wiring for the taillights. Luckily, the LED stop/brake light in the factory housing had wire labels printed on the LED board. I pulled open the secondary connector (little pigtail sticking out of the middle hole on the factory taillight housing) and was able to track the wire color changes back to the main harness. Now I just need to strip the wires, put little tiny ring terminals on them and screw them to the right terminals in the UTE taillights (also nicely labeled).

Shoot, that's a great idea! I'll probably wire the ones I have just to get me rolling but the FJ ones may be a nice replacement. I also like that they appear to be much lower profile than the ones I have. Thanks!

I have always liked the look of them myself. I believe you can get LED directly fit replacement ones for them too. I plan on running the mom my expo trailer when I finish it up.

Nice! I had an FJ40 and the taillights were kinda cool on that thing. I like the round lights from the earlier FJs too but more visibility isn't a bad thing.

    Taillight wiring temporarily done!

    IMG_4983.jpg
I pulled the wiring off the back of the OEM taillight. It's easy to do.

    IMG_4988.jpg
Write down all of your wire colors and functions!

    IMG_4989.jpg
Once you're sure you know what's going on, clip off all of the bulbs.

    IMG_4990.jpg
    IMG_4991.jpg
Feed all 7 wires in through the back of the housing.

    IMG_4993.jpg
Now, hook all the wires to the right, other wires...

Yes, I know this isn't optimized and it's not supposed to be. I left all of the wiring as long as possible so I can tweak and optimize based on my bumper and how I mount everything. Also, I may switch taillights at some point. Anyway, the point is they work for now and I'll dial it when I'm more sure of all of the variables.

    IMG_4994.jpg
    Close it all up!

    IMG_4995.jpg
    Pretty clean.

I've got an idea for a temporary 'bumper' that I can mount all of this stuff to. Just need to expend the time and elbow grease to make it. Tomorrow...

    Temporary 'bumper' and maiden voyage!

    IMG_4996.jpg
Used a piece of 2.5" angle aluminum that I had laying around to make a quick and dirty light holder. Didn't feel like spending the time to do a license plate brakcket so I zip-tied it to the headboard. I'll get it all dialed in real nice when I get my bumper designed and built.

Haven't decided whether or not I'm going to put the drop sides and tailgate on it. It's pretty easy so I guess I should try it out.

Took it out for a quick drive. On the road is seemed pretty quiet. Filling up the tank is a compromise for sure. You can't leave the pump sitting in the filler like a regular tank. You have to hold it the whole time. And my 34 gallon tank doesn't help that situation. Haha. Also, it still overfills like normal. I'll keep messing with the various lines to try to reduce the issue but I think it's more to do with the design of the tank itself and how fuel flows into it more than the actual vent lines. I could be wrong...

Thanks! I'm thinking about washing my truck now. It's only been a year or so. It's so nasty and the new shiny flatbed is just making it look worse! I put the drop sides on it too so I'll get a picture when I get it washed. Probably early tomorrow morning.

You do. Trust me, you NEED this project. I actually got really excited about the prospect of making it into a trailer.

It's only a slightly further drive from Texas.
