There's no difference visually between the extended and non-extended Kings...the difference is inside the shock, there's a small 1" or so washer in there that is removed for the extended travel ones. If you get that removed when rebuilding them you can easily make them extended travel

15mph makes it a soft bump, 20mph just slightly smoother, over that, if you only hit one side it feels like nothing, and 30mph or over you can run that fucker right through the middle and not feel the bump.

    YMMV

At least for me, there was no way I'd be able to get that punch on the collar with the shock installed. I mean, maybe I could get it to turn 3 or 4 degrees at a time, but it was WAY faster to just jack the truck up and actually remove the shock entirely and stick it on my vice (using a bracket, not actually clamping the shock to the vice, lol).

Also, it's better to minimize the amount of force that's on the threads while turning them anyway. Easier to turn the collar, and doesn't put so much strain on the threads themselves.

    that's half the fun!

I have to watch myself sometimes. I'll forget I'm in my 4Runner (stock suspension) and mob speed bumps. It's fun to watch my wife grab the oh shit handle when I'm in the Taco and I'm approaching a speed bump.

    :bikewhoops:

BTW, if a mod is listening, this needs to be a truck, not a dirt bike...

yeah you have to do it carefully to not jump threads or damage them. It might also depend on which UCAs you run, I have the SPCs and it's pretty easy to work around them with the punch except for one particular hole...I ended up bending the end of the punch which made it a lot easier lol.

The punch holes are a little chewed up on mine from doing it on the truck but I shouldn't ever need to adjust them again now...hopefully

Yeah, with my UCAs there was just no way I could get teh tool in there. I think it might be a little easier with the proper spanner type tool vs. the punch style. But hey, it's the free tool included with the shocks, so...

I have one for my motorcycle, but it doesn't fit the Kings.

It's actually a badge of honor I proudly display to be able to piss off some 3rd genners.

Not that it's really all that hard, tho...

Just tell them any of the following is not a mod -

    Removing decals and/or badges

    All weather mats

    Shorty antenna

    LED lighting

I found if you don't want to remove it from the truck you can always use a tiedown to hold the compression on the spring as you loosen the collar it gets easer to spin. Then loosen the tiedown slowly to set the spring back on the collar.

Back on subject though; I had a hell of a time lessening the preload on my Kings.

I basically hammered the punch into the hole of the collar (to ensure it was all the way in), and cranked hard just to turn it a slight bit; yes the collar was loosened per the instructions.

Removing the coilover is the best way to adjust preload.

    Huh?

It's not longer per say, it's just a different set of spacers that allow it to travel farther, so you get more down travel.

I'm not really picking up what you're putting down here.

The number of threads showing isn't an indicator of how much travel you have, or can have. It's not even really an indicator of how much higher you can push the coils. It's probably a standard shock body they use on a lot of different shock models. How much more lift you can have is more dependent on on the rest of your suspension geometry.

the spacers I'm talking about that can change the amount of total travel are internal. You can't see them.
