Agreed on both counts; officers will ticket you anyways because there are no repercussions for them when they cite you for something that is not illegal and most people would not contest it.

I can only offer anecdotal evidence from an encounter I had with my old truck. They tried to tell me my old S10's bumpers were illegal but I pulled out my copy of the VC from my glove box and read the pertinent code. We went back and forth with them trying to cite me and me looking it up on the spot until finally they gave up on equipment violations and cited me for blocking the crosswalk (past the last house in a cul de sac).

Yeah, maybe. I'll still take my chances knowing that the receiver is going to get hit whether the hitch is on or not.

What's more of a deterrent to tailgaters, a nice smooth flat plastic bumper, or a big spike of metal sticking out of the back of your truck?

No kidding. If you get hit at 30 MPH what difference does a receiver make, it's just something to add to your insurance bill at that point. I give more of a damn about the idiot who bumps me in the drive thru not denting my $700 OEM bumper. Hitch balls help keep your sanity from random morons tapping you, they don't keep you safe from being plowed into.

True, all trucks are classified as commercial vehicles in CA though SUVs are considered passenger vehicles, though all of my friends who've been ticketed are driving trucks, not SUVs. So not sure how that all works out, but the tickets get written anyway, I'm curious though if they were contested in court how the chips would fall as trucks are seemingly exempt. Or maybe there's another VC that I'm missing.

gotta love CA vehicle code! i wonder if they define 4wd as true 4wd like the tacoma has (ie Part time), cus lets throw an AWD "technically 4wd" suv into the mix bahahha.

either way, my hitch stays, always had, rarely do i hit my shin on it as i have had it for so long (though it catches others and i laugh). and like stated saves from the small bumps.... a big bump is gonna fuck things up regardless

I was going to mention this as well. Continously forget about the hitch and accidently walk into the receiver ball .A rather painfull black and blue experience
