    Am I correct to assume the area around the tweeter should be filled to direct all of the sound into the cab?

    The frequencies they reproduce are directional by nature. Just make sure that they're not crooked when installed and you should be fine.

    The reason a speaker cones back is isolated from the front is because the sound waves from the back is opposite to the front; and so they tend to cancel each other.

    I don't think I've ever seen an open basket tweeter.

    Woofers, midranges....ok. they're moving much more air than a tweeter and need access to volume behind them to operate. I've seen woofers with surrounds pushed off of the basket because they were in to small an enclosure.
