Hey all so I'm in the market for a new rim fire and I would love to get a 10/22 for multiple reasons the main being aftermarket parts billions of them. The only negative I have is not even with the gun itself it's with the ammo available of 22lr right now . So I've just recently started looking into the savage model A17 mainly because everytime I go to get ammo there's always plenty of .17hmr but the A17 is relatively new and theres not really many aftermarket parts for them. Any one have any input suggestions or just general bullshit. Also for any of my fellow ct small game hunters if you haven't already heard its now legal to hunt with . 17hmr.... FINALLY

Imo can't go wrong with either.

Both have pros and cons. in that case buy both.

The only semi auto in .17hmr is the savage A17 but the round/caliber is pretty cool as well even in a bolt action

    A . 22lr will kill a sparrow. A .17hmr will turn a sparrow into a pink mist.

I would go with the .17 hmr. on a calm day you can get that little bullet out to 250 yards accurately. but a 10/22 is also a fun little gun. for me I just enjoy shooting the .17 a little more than a .22 lr just because of the ass it's got behind it.

Idk where about you guys are located but here in CT .22lr is still almost still impossible to find but there's always plenty of .17hmr

We can find a lot of 22lr but the prices are still jacked up. 17hmr and 22 mag have only gone up a little bit in price and it's always stocked up on the shelves

17 hmr hits way better than 22lr at 100+ yards. I have a 10/22 and a bolt-action Savage 17 hmr. I use the Savage way more. 22lr sucks at long range.

It depends on what you want to do with it. .22lr is slowly getting back in stock. I saw it for less than $3.00 just the other day, and there was plenty of it. My buddy bought to bricks from a different store a day or two before, and they had cases upon cases of the stuff. And I'm not talking shitty Thunderbolt crap. HMR is a fine round, but that stuff is stupid priced. I love 10/22s I have five of them, one being converted to .17 HM2, (try and find some of those). I've posted this before, but I'll whore them out again.IMG_0801.jpg

That's a bro snag rig right there. I'd bust that thing into little pieces in the cab of my pickup on the first gopher hunting trip...

10/22 take downs are nice and fit in a Tacoma without breaking a window.

Do you like to tinker? If so, buy a 10/22.

Personally, I don't varmint hunt so I have no real use for a .17 HMR. It's an interesting round, but even at current inflated prices .22 LR is still the most economical practice option out there.

Dude I was slaying gophers all summer with .17 hmr. It's great for varmints at 300 yards, even in the wind.

Ya see that's why I'm leaning towards the 10/22 cause I'd like to do a little build all my buddies did mild 10/22 builds nothing crazy maybe just a bull barrel, hogue stock, bi-pod, and a scope. Now I could be wrong but the last time I checked there really wasn't any aftermarket options yet for the A17 as opposed to the 10/22 which has freaking like billions hahaha

I have both. A 10/22 and 10/22 break down in .22 LR and a Marlin bolt gun in .17 HMR. They are all fun guns to shoot and are all very accurate. The .17 HMR is more accurate due to muzzle velocity and has better ballistics than the .22 magnum. Both cartridges are easily found and reasonably priced. It comes down to what you plan on shooting with the cartridge. I plink with both and would hunt small animals with either. You will definitely get more accurate shots at greater distances with the .17 HMR.
