Expected. And will get greater as the % of EV and even fuel sipping ICE increases.

Road construction and maintenance isn't free.

Ah yes, the good times are coming to an end. I think something similar happen to EV registration in California not too recently. A lot of Tesla drivers were hit with a substantially larger yearly registration fee as the subsidies ended.

This is nothing new. Be thankful your state held out as long as it did. Just wait until taxing by the mile catches on.

"For example, at least 39 states now require a special registration fee for EVs, also known as battery-powered electric vehicles (BEVs) or other non-emission motor vehicles or alternative fuel vehicles. Of those, 32 states also assess a registration fee for either a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEVs) or non-plug-in hybrid electric vehicles with combustible engines. These fees are typically in addition to traditional motor vehicle registration fees. EV registration fees range from a low of $50 in Colorado to a high of $290 in New Jersey starting in 2028. The fees for hybrid vehicles range from a possible low of $50 up to $150."

Indiana increased its fee from $150 to $230 for EVs, and that might not include the state's excise tax drivers pay every year.
