Alright, first off.... I have to say that I'm probably one of those people who would normally be offended and outraged by this post, given I was raised in the southern "bible belt" of Texas. Now, I'll give my 2 cents and get off my soapbox. If this comes across the wrong way, Tom, I apologize in advance. :D

So here's what I'm thinking. Gah... I need to put quotes in this thing. The terms "atheist" and "religion" have been brought up a few times in the same sentence. But instead of looking at "is atheism a religion, is it not?" Rather... look at it this way....
Alright kids, science 101. What is light? Ions, particles, bouncing off of things so that we can see color, etc. (i'm not a scientist.. this isn't the point). What is darkness...? The "absence" of light. So..... would it be too much to think of atheism not as a "religion" or a "not a religion", but rather the "absense of religion".
Ok, second.. just throwing it out there. Killing people because of their beliefs was brought up. Now think of every war in history.... in ALL of history. What do they all have in common? They are all about land, religion, or politics. That's it!! People have been killing people because of their religion for thousands of years. It's not going to stop any time soon, and it certainly hasn't just started. I'm not defending Communists by any means, just saying...
Now... Tom...you facinate me. As I said, I was raised in church. And growing up I had friends who were atheists. They would always try to throw scripture at me, reversing it, taking it out of context, etc. Now.... that's not to say that "every" piece of scripture that's been posted here has been in context, because it hasn't. But anyway..
I have to say, you're probably the first atheist that I've seen, who can have an intellectual conversation, be open to other opinions and beliefs, and not try to disprove everything everyone says. I'll give you credit for that.

To my fellow believers.... this is interesting to me as.... it lets me see the other side. All I've ever seen is religion and church. I'm curious to see what other people believe, and how they percieve the bible. Let the man speak...

No quotes here. I look at it this way. We are born, we live, then we die. Are we so arrogant as a species that we think there is not a higher being responsible for all of this? Think about that.

Teetotalism (sometimes tee-totalism): refers to either the practice of or the promotion of complete abstinence from alcoholic beverages. (think about it)

Here's the deal. I'm going to spend an hour every Sunday morning memorizing these quotes. Then I too can go to work every day and shove unsolicited shit down peoples' throats.

Do those of you who quote the scripture word for word realize that the Bible was written in another language that can not be accurately translated word for word to the English language? Do you realize the Bible has had parts added, removed, and changed throughout history by various kings and religious entities? Hell, the Bible even tells right there on the cover what "version" it is. And those are just the versions floating around these days.

I grew up heavily in church. I even went to a private school. Then one day I started thinking critically for myself. I realized that I didn't need a fictional book, I mean Bible, or a self-serving business, I mean church, to tell me what to do, how to do it, and what to believe, when with a little common sense, I can determine it on my own.

I can't say all Bible thumpers are bad. The vast majority are good people that do their thing and let me do mine. I respect that. I can, however, say that the vast majority of self-righteous, judgmental, hypocrites are Bible thumpers.

Flame away! God will protect me.:crapstorm:

DuderAbides, awesome post brother! I'll use some of these. I really like the quote from Gene Roddenberry.

No "flamin" here dude! Sounds like you've had some touchy times in the past, but you've made your choice, as has everyone else, so I wouldn't worry about anyone giving you crap.:) Better to say it like you feel in other words...I was just the opposite; raised 9 kinds of hell for 40 years, then chose to go the opposite way...and yes Hebrew and Greek are difficult to translate into the English language! I would like to know what parts of the bible were taken away/added/missing or whatever, as I'd like to check it out...thanks...

You've made a statement filled with logical thought, and respect. Even though you have different beliefs than me, I could care less, I like you anyway.;)

Regarding the dropped/added/changed statement. I can't remember the details of what I've heard over the years but as an example, entire books have been deleted. Try a Google search. As with anything on the Internet, the majority of what you find will be complete crap. Nevertheless, I imagine you'll find a few eyebrow raisers to ponder as well.

I was there at one point looking at the history of the Bible and the history of the church.

I think a big misconception in the image of Christianity is the reality of the Bible. Nowhere in the Bible does it mention the Bible. The Bible speaks of the word and scripture, not an anthology. My point is the format of the Bible isn't what is important, it is the devine inspiration (that's where I lose most people). It isn't hard to believe for me that the God that created the world and everything in it also transcends language. In the same vein, I follow Jesus, not a "church" or a denomination or sect. The Bible makes it pretty clear (John 2:19) the church is not a building, but a relationship, as corny as that sounds.

Got 'er dude! I did the Google and found some stuff you mentioned and yes, I will check it out. Used to have "Bible Head" myself from getting thumped by some...made the choice on my own MANY years later, and not so much from "organized" religion either...it was an inner thing...only beatings I endure now are from the wife, and they can last for days.;) Got to love this board!

Thanks for all the kind words guys! More importantly, thanks for providing your views and opinions in a...how shall I put it "non abrasive way"! Excellent quotes as well. Its glad to know that people, at least it seems here on this forum are tolerant and accepting of one another, and understand we all have our own beliefs and thoughts. I would be certainly offended if someone came on the board slandering christianity, or religion for that matter, I'll be just as fast to defend religion as anyone else. Its one thing to politely disagree, and even have a thought provoking conversation, but the dude will not abide asinine blatantly offensive statements designed to simply ruffle feathers. I cannot stand when people say they are atheists, and I ask why, and they're only response is "because god isn't real, the bible says terrible things etc etc". yet they know nothing of the bible its passages or its meanings. I thoroughly enjoyed the bible, very meaningful piece of work. EVERYONE can take something away from that book, I certainly have.

"if god truly does exist, you won't find him in a church, or in a book. You'll find him in sunrises, sunsets, and star filled skies. You'll find him in the laughter of children, in the company of friends. You'll find him in your heart."

I am pleasantly surprised that this thread has stayed civil. It's difficult to hear other opinions when people bring up things that you can't explain or don't have a snappy answer for, no matter if you are a Bible believer or an Atheist. I believe it's good to talk these things out.
