To those who scoff at the 10K + miles between oil changes on synthetic oil, consider this...

BMW recommends doing oil changes every 15,000 miles on their vehicles. Basically they have a once a year oil change. It is all synthetic oil.

I've got almost 90K on my MINI and only change oil when the computer in the car tells me to. Averages about every 12,000 miles. Only ever had Castrol Syntec in the crankcase. No problems at all so far... <knocks wood> :)

My Taco is on a 5K interval with normal oil for now.

As mentioned b4 in this thread, I'd be more concerned about going 10K on the oil filter than the oil itself.

BMW vehicles do not have a Toyota 4.0L engine under the hood.... different animal altogether.

So, in a BMW... what does the oil look like after 15K miles? Is it tan in color or like dark chocolate?

What does it look like at 5k miles?

There's not much difference in BMW and Toyota engines as far is this is concerned...internal combustion engines all do pretty much the same thing. If anything, Toyota is much less high-strung and finicky and so would handle it better.

The real difference is the EU has put terrific pressure on the entire automotive industry value chain to reduce pollution, so auto and oil industry have responded. This pressure has been mounting for quite some time.

I WOULD look for oils that have BMW 'LL' specification certification (or VW 502 specification) if you want to do this though. It seriously makes a difference for long drain intervals. Those oils will probably be in 0w40 or 5w40 weight though...an that WILL make a difference because Toyota designers seem to have gone the low-viscosity approach favoring fuel economy.

You'll be left on your own to find a low-vis oil with good long service life properties. (Penn Platinum is one...as is Mobil1 extended drain)

Color prolly will be dark when you drain, but that's perfectly OK. It shows the oil is doing it's job. Looking at oil color to infer anything is just another of those old-wife tale things that should be forgotten.

I think one of the reasons Toyota is sticking with the 5K interval is Toyota engine sludging is still fresh in some consumers minds. The last thig Toyota needs right now is a mass recall for engine problems; therefore they tend to keep it on the conservative/safe side. There have been several folks over on BITOG who have run 10K intervals on the 4.0 without any issues and Blackstone lab results to prove it is safe. As someone else has stated, the couple a quality synthetic with a quality oil filter and you should be fine for 10K miles. Suprised to see some folks sticking to the 3K OCI....I guess old habits are hard to break?

It's not the oil filter that matters. There should be no reason for the oil filter to be catching stuff by 200 miles or so after oil change. If it is then the engine is making hunks of metal and you're f*cked.

What does matter is the air filter...if it's bad then dust/sand drawn in is blown by the rings so the oil filter has to catch it. Keep your air filter fresh and everything tight and well sealed on the intake and you'll be good.

Oh...and throw away that K&N PoS if you got one...they do nothing but harm.

Yeah the Air Filter probably matters more than an oil filter in retrospect; however the oil filter is cheap insurance. As you've said most oil filters don't trap dirt and particles to capacity. If so, then you're right if you have massive chuncks of metal in your filter than you have bigger problems. In racing and extreme engine applications, some choose to bypass an oil filter in favor of oil flow with little to no issues. However for $5-$10 you can get a decent filter capable of running for 10K miles

Not a wise tale....atleast not for me.

Synthetic oils are good at 'cleansing' and removing dirt/sludge. My oil is really really dark after 5K miles (like dark chocolate). That tells me, its DIRTY oil. Personally for me - my oil is already dirty at 5K miles, I'm not leaving that dirty oil in there for another 5k miles.

The idea is not to let the sludge be formed in the first place. THAT is what ANY modern detergent oil excels at... even petroleum oils... holding the dirt and carbon in suspension. So they look dirty...and the engine is clean!

its 2021 and 10k oil changes seems pretty normal. most newer cars doing it w 0w16/0w20. newer synthetics oils/filters rated 10k+ miles. curious if anyone been doing 10k oil changes consistently on 2nd gen.

    heres the debate...
oil so cheap just do it at 5k
go by the manual 5k or 7k or 6 mths
why change so early when synthetic oil/filter is rated +10k miles

i change mine before 5000 miles just because engine break-in. then i'll take it to the dealer for the 10k service. also changed the rear diff fluid at 1500 miles and it was pretty nasty.

Sadly they never die.....and unfortunately never stop being born either.

That said....the reason Toyota never officially adopted a 10k OCI on the 4.0 single VVT-i is because the recommended weight is 5w30. 5w30 GTMO is conventional. The average person wouldn't know whether they have conventional, blend or synthetic in their engine. So to avoid the possibility of someone idling in stop and go city traffic for 10k miles on a conventional oil, they just kept the OCI at 5k. The dual VVT-i 1GR 4.0 does recommend 0w20 and 10k OCIs.

Same reason Toyota engines that recommend 0w20 (which is only synthetic) are cautioned to have the oil changed from 5w20 back to 0w20 "at the next OC". Because 5w20s are available in conventional, blends and synthetics. The owner may not know what they have. If you know for a fact that the 5w20 you're running is fully synthetic then it's your choice to leave it in there for 10k if you want
