    Automatic no mods so far. As other people have stated, I work from home and have short trips. Bought it in November and just over a 1000 miles now so you can see how little it has been driven. I am only comparing it to my past truck an 2008 Tundra, where I drove the same frequency and route, where I averaged 17. I do not mean to complain just trying to understand a baseline before I do any mods.

    Thanks again for all the comments and advice.

    I was averaging 16-18 stock right off the bat. Didn’t really agree with that either so ended up getting an OVTune from Quoc. I’m from San Diego too and he comes down about once a month to tune trucks in Mira Mesa.

    Maybe the next 2 fill ups you rest the trip and see what youre actually getting.

    How much did the tune help your mpg?

    Exponentially! But mind you this was completely stock. No lift no wheels and tires, and this was me being light footed. As soon as I lifted it and slapped on 295’s it dropped to 13-14mpgs. Just got re-geared yesterday to gain some more back. Will also have to re-tune for the new gearing. So if you do get tuned by Quoc I’ll probably see you there. Gotta love free re-tunes.

    These tunes seem to increase power, fuel economy and better drivability. Is there a downside? Just curious as to why Toyota wouldn't do a better job of this from the get go.

    If you look in your manual the first 1k are break in miles. The ECU for some reason runs richer for first thousand miles. You should notice a difference in MPG after 1500 miles. Yes this is normal.

    I think toyota does on many of their gen3 tacomas now. Mine is fine with the latest tsb tune, has many of the tacoma gen3's our local water company operates after speaking with a friend that works for them. My buddies wasn't. Some trucks just run better for what reason idk. I'm getting to think if you bought a sub par performing tacoma, the reason for a tune. Of course there's alway some that think they should perform like a muscle car.

    Mine actually got the best fuel economy during that period, but the truck seemed to be slower with less power. Once past 1500 miles it was a totally truck. The transmission was shifting spot on, and the power increase was dramatic. Today at 15k miles its a joy to drive. Its gets far better fuel mileage than my gen1 tundra, and has more giddy-up when called for.

    Takes no extra time or energy. I’m already waiting for the gas pump. Throwing in my mileage into an app takes no real time at all.

    Plus, when you track over the long term, you can watch your 3rz exhaust valves degrade in real time

    these trucks are very sensitive to gas quality. i noticed if i fill up with a different octane it will run pretty badly for the next 2 or 3 tanks while it figures everything out.

    Take it in or call. I have a manual transmission, 1200 miles, bigger tires, and am getting 16.5, and I suck at driving a MT (meaning, I’m gassing it too much still). What’s the worst thing that could happen if you simply called them to see if it’s problematic?

    Well, mine runs best on e10 87 grade here. No difference with E10 89, and noticeably worse with E10 91 or higher grade fuels. Doesn't matter how many tanks of each i run either. You'll notice a difference between 87 and going to 91 or higher within 25 miles.

    It was kind of a joke, just noting the trend and joking about my recent repair. I mostly track it because it takes no effort with modern apps and satisfies curiosity

    @H7D F5T i get 11.5 mpg towing a 4,800lb brick behind me.

    Tge first 1,000 miles i did was probably around 19mpg then got better after a couple of k’s.

    Unless you are doing sub 5 mile trips something is not right.

    Also, with that app specifically, I can set up custom maintenance alerts for all the things I do without regard to the manual. I know when and what mileage my tires were bought and the last time they were balanced, or the last time I changed u-joints or greased my shackle bolts without carrying a bunch of discount tire and Napa receipts around
