Sounds like you're checking your mpg's and never letting the truck get to operating temps.

I installed a sailboat mast on my truck and saw an increase of 4mpg under full sail.

I actually get 1-2 more mpg when I'm pulling the kayak trailer behind my Tacoma. They probably streamline the airflow. Verified numerous times on 100-300 mile drives.

Idling can play a HUGE part in it. Good point. I noticed today my trip average for 180 miles dropped from 15.6 to 13 in the 10 minutes I took to spray the truck off. If the truck never gets to operating temps that's probably also a huge factor. It still seems low, but those two things are MPG killers with stock a stock ride AND with a lifted ride. Especially if it's cold outside.

Completely stock SR5 with leer topper. Drive mostly back and forth to work which is 1.6 miles away and to the store a few miles the other way. Average on a tank is usually 16-17mpg with mostly city and on trips usually get 21-23ish mpg depending on how much stuff is loaded in the bed.

My MPG is 12.9 right now. Literally have no clue why it’s so bad. I have 32 inch tires, 1.5 inch lift, and I average about 70mph on the highway. I’m going back home in a few days so I’ll be on the road for about 4 hours so I’ll see if anything changes. I thought I was being smart by only bringing my debit card to college and for some reason the magnetic strip stopped working so I’ll be lucky if I actually make it home

So I took a short trip today to run errands and tracked my trip meter. Normal traffic situations, one 45 MPH stretch and the usual city driving got me the following. Now I am lifted and on E rated 33's, but the point stands. Only in town and 11.5 MPG is certainly possible with no highway driving, even with a stock truck. Especially in a Major metro area. Air temp was 43º and tire psi was 39.

And yes my truck needs cleaned lol.

I take what the OP says at face value..."averaged 11.5 mpg for the first 1,000 miles". Not per tank, not per trip...

Update: Talked to the dealer and they confirmed I am getting poor gas mileage but nothing is wrong with the truck.
Since I mostly drive short local drives I was excited to see an improved mpg's over a longer all freeway trip. I drove to Phoenix from San Diego this past week with an average of 15.5 MPG (am improvement from my normal 12.5 MPG). Most of the drive is completely flat with only mountains when leaving San Diego. On the way there I tried the cruise control on the flat sections at 77mph. On the way home I did not use the cruise control and tried to play with the pedal to shift into high gear. I had slightly better mpg not using the cruise control but still poor.

I recorded each fill-up and mileage. I feel the transmission is not shifting to the appropriate gear which is causing poor mpg's. Again, I know I did not buy a Pius but I was hoping for 19 to 20 mpg's like others on here. I am putting off a tune, hoping that the dealer can help diagnose.

I drove a friend's 2021 and noticed that my 2022 feels much different when you let off the gas. His seemed normal with a freewheel with a slight decline in speed. My truck decelerates much more when you let off the gas, like it has regenerative braking of something. Has anyone else experienced this with their 2022?

Did the dealer do any data logging to diagnose? Something sounds wrong to me, like torque converter not locking maybe something with the fueling. Without data though we may as well be throwing darts.

I would be tempted to contact Toyota, you’re pretty far from the average on these trucks

Is the engine brake feeling the same in S-mode as it is in D. If so, clutch 1 might be engaged; it's modulated release in D and modulated apply in S-mode.

Interesting point. I will try that. Thank you for your input.

The dealer ran a diagnostic and it confirmed my fuel economy. They were very dismissive and reluctant.

Slow down and gas mileage will dramatically improve. You use at least 25% more fuel pushing truck at 77mph as apposed to 60mph.

All sounds very normal too me still.

On my '17, if I let off the gas the DFCO certainly kicks in and my truck will actually slow down going downhill even. S6 will do away with the engine braking, and the learning part of the tranny. My truck in Cruise is the exact same as yours. I get about 2-3 MPG better not using CC.

My truck even new @ 77 MPH would get maybe 16 MPG, maybe. 70-72 ish is where you throw MPG to the wind and start not caring. My best ever overall tank avg. is 19.3 MPG. My best real trip avg. while not trying to game the system is 22.2 MPG over about 20 miles or so.

I can't remember if you have the AT or MT, but I find using S5 eliminates a vast majority of the complaints with the tranny and "odd" shifting.
