I have an 09 tacoma, started it 2 days ago and my dash lights up, brake light, abs light, check engine light. Speedometer doesnt work, gas guage wanders from full to half tank. Went to a local auto parts store and had em give me the codes. All wheel sensors, Speedo and positive battery cable. I work a lot and have only had the time to clean the positive cable and the leads that tie into my positive cable which did nothing to fix the problem. The Toyota dealership wants my money which I'm not giving up just yet. Has anyone seen this happen or have any good advice on how to fix this problem? Thanks, Wade

I would suggest alternator cuz that's how my truck reacted but I don't think the O'reily guys are *that* stupid to not know haha

I will check the fuses and thank you for the information. I had a Ford diesel a few years ago and the tranny started acting strange, turned out it was low voltage due to the battery cable being bad. I thought it might be something like that with my Tacoma but I'll definitely check the fuses. I just had a remote start put in it and thought that might have something to do with it, they say it's not though. Thank you

Radio and fan still work? I've had intermittent issues with IGN1 and IGN2 fuses and they have me some of those issues.

I worked in the automotive industry 40 years. And coincidences are few and far between. I'd bet money when your problem is finally figured out that it's related to the remote start installation.

Definitely look at these first. Subarus for example commonly throw random codes when the battery starts going out. On my '08 I had speed sensor and steering angle sensor codes when that happened. Grounds and alternator could cause the same problems.

Busted CV boots and lots of squeaks.
Could be a grounding issue somewhere.

Radio and fan still work, speedo and gas guage are still not working correctly. I go on days off friday morning so I'll start going through things then. I'm planning on getting back in touch with the remote start people also. Thanks again for all the advice.

Too much to list, but enough to get me in trouble. Repeatedly.
There's one particular fuse -- I forget which one, but it's in the driver's knee box -- that does this when it blows. Seems like half the truck runs through it.
    1) Check your fuses
    2) Uninstall the remote starter (the slightest error in installation and you're FUBAR for getting things to work right again)

So I disconnected the battery for 20 minutes to reset things and took it back to the auto parts store to have the codes read again. I'm down to 4 codes, all speed sensor according to the parts guy. I'm not sure if the spped sensor is the same as the wheel sensor, last time I had the codes read, their were 4 wheel sensors that came up? Ive checked both ABS fuses and they're fine as well as the rest of the fuses under the hood. So what's next?

not sure if it could be the probem but i had a mouse chew through my wiring a while back. caused the dash to light up. cost me like $300 at the dealer to track down the messed up wiring and get it repaired.

Seriously? What is the code for that? And where is the sensor?

    Piling on like several others...........

Remote start (even if it's fuse related, the installer could have easily created the issue) LIFO (last in, first out)

    System grounds

    Battery on the way out

Alternator on the way out. Don't know where the regulators are in these vehicles, in the alternator or in the ECU?

So I think I've found the problem. The previous owner put a 6" lift on it and didn't route the wires to both the left and right wheel sensor so they wouldn't rub on the CV boot. Crawled under the truck a few minutes ago and found both wires had been rubbing on the CV boot and rubbed it down to open wires which I assume have grounded out. No blown fuses but I'm guessing that's the problem, I'll keep you posted!

    P0500 OBD-II Trouble Code

    Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction
    What does that mean?

Basically this means that the vehicle's speed as read by the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is not working properly.

I hope your problem is found, and this code would seem to support what you've found in the ABS sensors.

My question was regarding the 'battery cable code'.
