Mine tows what I need it to tow. If I wanted to pull a building down I wouldn't get a midsize truck.

It all depends on what you want want to tow, how often. But, if we're just going by rankings, that would explain why I see so many F250s pulling aluminum jon boats.

I don't think any midsize really does better for towing except the GM diesel Colorado. But that model is expensive and acceleration sucks.

If I had to tow more than 3500 lbs consistently, I'd probably recommend a full-size truck. The Tacoma is a good compromise of performance (speed and towability), mileage and cost.

In before the 2nd gen guy says his pulls 9,900#, in OD, at 85 MPH, in to a 25 MPH headwind, in the mountains, and gets 47 MPG.

Eh, I'd be comfortable up to the tow rating. Tow ratings in the US are pretty conservative. I think the only thing that worries me would be overelheating an auto transmission, or even more so trying to go too fast.

I'll never forget the day I was putting along in the right lane at a cool 65mph in the Nissan pulling a fully loaded 6x12 uhaul. I got passed by some jackass in a half ton truck pulling a lightly loaded, but poorly loaded, single axle trailer. He zipped right by me, and maybe a minute later the wiggle got to him, he skidded 90 degrees on the interstate, went through the ditch, and got parked on top of a barbed wire fence. He was so incredibly lucky that his stupidity didn't kill him. He had all the required equipment, but just wasnt using it right.

    2017 Tacoma OR 4x4 (formerly a 1998 SR5 PU, 2002 OR 4x4, 1995 4x4 4Runner, 1985 4x4 Toy PU) ... and RIP’s (rust in pieces) to a Bronco II 4x4 & S10 Blazer 4x4
My brother in law had a 24’ Bayliner with a V8 and heavy wood decking and a rusting apart trailer with no working brakes.

What did he tow it with? A Chevy S10!!

We had to get out to help push him up the ramps, and one time he wove through parked cars and emergency vehicles at an intersection that was blocked from an accident because he couldn’t stop in time for the light, and the cops standing there didn’t even notice him go by!

That by far was the best worst truck for towing!!

I bought mine to tow our 12' travel trailer. If I didn't need to tow, I would have bought something else.

We are fortunate enough to keep my old truck for all our towing/hauling needs.

I've towed a camper that's 3500 lbs in hilly country--it does fine, but at least IMO you're not going to have fun towing close to the tow rating. It seems like a lot of work and stresses the truck quite a bit.

Can it do it? Yes. Will your performance and gas mileage suck big time? Yes.

I would consider more weight for short distances on rare occasions where a bunch of hills aren't involved. That's the real forte of diesel, btw, not a midsize petrol truck.

No Tacomas are not for towing, but they can do the job and in some situations a midsize is what's called for.

The Tacoma is the perfect all-arounder. It will tow SMALL boats and camper trailers like there is literally nothing back there, it’s a beast off road, it’s nimble in the city and gets great gas mileage if you drive the right way for it. My dad’s 3/4 ton Ram tows a 9,000lb boat like there’s nothing back there, but it’s a bear to drive around Seattle and you certainly wouldn’t want to take it on a trail. Every vehicle is a compromise.

I still can't get my head around the TW comments of "no Tacoma's aren't for towing"...…….uh it's a truck and it is rated to tow a certain weight.
mixed with the "I tow 8000# without a brake controller @ 70mph". uh yea it might do it but....not recommended.

I'm considering a F350 to haul mulch after reading all the comments about how our trucks suck at being trucks.
