You’re not going to like this answer…

To get your truck the same inverter as the better optioned models, it’s going to be such a sticker shock you’ll walk right away.

For the price you think you want to pay, you’re best off getting something like this: 120 Watt Continuous/240 Watt Peak Modified Sine Wave Power Inverter

Thanks, I was hoping to find something a bit more permanent.

What do you want to use the inverter for? There’s a standard cheap ones, a modified sine wave one which is more expensive, and the most expensive is a pure sine wave type. The basic ones you should only use electric motors for, like chainsaws, blenders, and things like that, the modified sine wave ones are fairly good for electronics, such as basic chargers, and pure sine wave ones are for more delicate electronics, such as computers and things like that.

As for permanently mounted ones, some people put them under the front passenger seat and behind the rear seats of a double cab, and others in the back of the truck. Don’t plan on mounting one in the engine compartment, it gets too hot inside there.

You’ll have to choose some cables that are the proper size for the length of cable you’re using also, and for the size of the inverter and what the current draw is of the things you are planning on plugging into it.

We can help you with planning and costing for it, but you need to provide a couple bits of information about what you want do with it, what you think the maximum current draw will be from the battery, and where you think you’ll be mounting it.

I personally installed two Renolgy inverters, a 3000 watt one in my trailer and the 700 watt one in my truck, both of which are the pure sign wave type I use for my ebike charger, phones, and computers in the trailer and truck. My larger one in the trailer also powers the microwave and blender. These are sold on Amazon here.

mainly it will be used for power tools, I would like it to be permanent and mounted on the back of the truck (ideally in the cubby hole) like the OEM one.

    what kind of power tools?

there's charging batteries, and there's POWER TOOLS
    [IMG]

even a corded circular saw is quite a load, and would really require at least a 5000 watt inverter, none of which are anything near cheap, or small.

look at your power tools, and see which one has the highest amp rating, I’m betting it’s a circular saw. If it’s less than 20A, then you’ll need about a 3000watt inverter, but they’re usually too big to fit in the cubby. Harbor freight has a 3000W modified sine wave inverter that would work with the saw and for charging batteries- be sure to get at least a modified sine wave inverter, don’t get a cheap standard one, it’ll fry your charger. Also if your charger makes weird noises when you plug it into the modified sine wave inverter, stop and return it because it’s not a good enough unit for the electronics in the charger and you’ll fry that also.

As for running cable from your battery to the inverter, I would put in at least a 10 AWG gauge cable if running up to 25 watts through the cable from front to back of the truck. Also be sure to get a 25 amp fuse or circuit breaker and put it on the positive line next to where it comes out of the battery. I personally like the blue seas busman style circuit breakers because you can turn them off when not in use and back on when you need power.

he’s gonna need a bigger inverter if he’s gonna be running power tools with it. at least 2500 or 3000 W for a circular saw.

I made this gadget to run some 12v battery powered tools off of truck power. The direct DC power cord beats an inverter for running similar tools off 120v AC. I even made the adapter to use common 120v extension cords.

I rigged it to use the common 12/14 ga. cords "backwards" so tools couldn't be zapped by some dummy plugging a tool into real 120v power. I also keep close control of the 12v plug that adapts the male 120v plug. This isn't for everyone - requires someone thinking about what they are doing and doing it safely.

My truck also has the factory inverter, and things like my 120v AC impact or a 1/2 chuck drill won't run off the 400w max delivery - but these 12v tools are happy. I use the AC for LED lighting strings.

So you’re running 12 volt power tools off your truck via extension cord? Why not just buy a few more batteries and go cordless? That heavy cord has to be a pain to work with.

In my life experience - the impact would have to have a "heavy cord" (air hose with compressor and receiver) or an expensive Dewalt battery and charger (of limited life and use). This set-up runs nice off the truck battery - puts lug nuts off and on with ease. Relatively inexpensive.

Interesting option. Where did you get the ‘donor’ battery for your adapter? I was considering something similar, but with SAE 12v connectors.

I had tried an el cheapo chinese "will fit" battery for the Dewalts and it died. Sacrificed for an adapter, gutted and rewired inside. Fitted with a 3 prong socket on a short lead. The male 12v plug is a Blue Sea item with a 10 amp fuse wired to a male 3 prong.

The other project I've been eyeing - direct truck battery power for operating a Dewalt tool battery charger. Found myself charging tool batteries with the trucks AC inverter running a charger - and kept thinking this is flipping ridiculous. An EE friend told me I needed to be using something like a solar battery management device - set to stay above the low discharge threshold of the lithium battery pack (and just using the 13.5v off the truck as the feed).

Looks like this would do the trick, but can't find it for sale in the USA, and it's not on the Dewalt USA website. Shows as Discontinued on the UK website, but still listed on the Australia website.
