I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
And also in order for me to get that shot I was about 40' from the subject. Another thing to note i don't know if you know the rule of thumb on shutter seed? To get the sharpest image you shouldn't have your shutter speed slower then your focal length. So if your shooting at 300mm you should set your shutter speed to nothing less then 1/300 for handheld shooting. As you can see I shot that image at 1/250 at 300mm and it's still sharp. I wouldn't of been at sharp with a non VR lens handheld.

In conclusion when looking for a super telephoto VR is the way to go. There is other company's that have as well. I think Tamron is VC but I only use Nikkor glass so I'm not sure. Another good thing to look at is the mounting plate of the lens if it's plastic it's not the greatest lens. Most kit lenses have plastic mounting plates and if your changing lenses often they will where down over time. Leaving you with a lens that won't fit or have a loose fit on the camera body.

oh i was not aware about the shutter speed rule of thumb, thanks for saying something haha, ill have to make sure i start doing that, but yeah i noticed that the nikkor i posted wasnt a vr lens so im definitely going to wait until i get enough money for a lens with vr, thanks for all the info man!

Remember to go faster if you are shooting on a crop sensor. For example with 1.6x crop you want shutter speed to equal 1/(FL*1.6)

okay so my d3000 is 1.5x, so lets say i am gonna take a picture at 300 it would be 1/(300*1.5)?

Yes in theory but if you have a VR lens and some steady hands you have some wiggle room. It's like taking a long shot with rifle just before you squeeze the shutter hold your breath. the only thing that should move is your finger pressing the shutter.

Your pie looks delicious. Have you tried bumping the exposure, it apears to be about 2/3 too a full stop under exposed. If you were going for the dark look then I am off base.

Personally I wouldn't get any of those lenses. I know it's hard (at least for me it is), but save up some money and get something similar to this: Tamron AF70-200 F/2.8

The reason is that you seem to want to shoot at a faster shutterspeed in low light for less blur, but you don't want increase the ISO too much. Your last option would be for a large f-stop. This lens can zoom in all the way to 200mm and stay at 2.8 f-stop. The other lenses you are looking at will decrease the f-stop size as you zoom in more.

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.

I did some checking on this lens and it looks pretty good. The optics are on par if not better then the Nikkor "at least that's what people are saying" The focus in the other hand not so much. It gets bad reviews on focus so if you plan on shooting moving subjects i wouldn't buy it. If you want it for portraits in natural night you should be fine. You do have to take into account there is no VC "vibration control" on this lens and zoomed out to 200mm on your body your going to have to keep your shutter speed above 1/320 to get sharp images. I know my body will sinc my flash at those speeds so make sure your does the same or you would be limited to natural light at 200mm. Another thing Tamron does not list the No. of diaphragm blades in the lens and that kinda turns me off because I like milky bokeh and if it has 6 or even 5 the bokeh will have jagged edges.

Here is a review of the lens.

And here is the AF of the lens man it sounds like shit. They say it's a Macro lens hell if you try and shoot something alive with this lens your going to scare it away trying to focus the shoot.
