12” Subwoofer Box Idea for 2002 Taco

I am still in the process of completing, but I thought I would share.

While you lose some abilities with this design, keep in mind that this is a 12” Subwoofer (1 cubic ft internal)

The same could be done with a 10” an you would not lose as many functions as I did.

Lost functions:
Hidden console compartment
Access to storage under jumpseats.

I’ve been meaning to do this with a 10” sub I have in my ext cab. right now it’s in a cheap box I bought at the sound system store. There is a jl audio 10” down fire box that is really nice for 1st gens but they want like $500 for it!(pic added) I definitely have it on the list but finishing my lift is at the top of that list.



I plan on making it, not buying it.

 

Yeah, if I could do it over again I would go with the 10 inch sub. However I am not sure how impressed I am with JL audio’s stealth box. I got the inspiration for this box from YouTube . https://youtu.be/nDkfuTixdpY However after taking on the project I realized he used a 10 inch sub, not a 12 inch like mine.

I will post more pics when it is done, It may sway your mind . The Stealth box will require some fiberglass. This Is what made me change my mind and go with this one.

If you are going with fiberglass you may want to consider the one above

My old setup. JL Audio 12W3V3 in a sealed box built by Justin Leathers of Just-Install in Chico, CA. He borrowed my truck for a few weekends to build a few boxes and gave me one for free for using my truck. Don't ask me for measurements as I don't have them. Same guy that built 1999 Tacoma box video posted above built mine:

Were the seatbelts still functional?

What’s up with that bolt on the back of the console? Is that a modification?

Not having much room in the back and having to bring my dog with me limits space. I was considering installing two 6.5 sub-woofers in the stock speaker locations. I know it's not a 12; actually it's a 13

Front or rear location?

 

I have a dog as well and he will have plenty of room given this set up

Rear. After reviewing some panel removal posts, I noticed what appears to be a separate box/modul that the speaker mounts in. I figured it could be sealed. I don't have time to look for the picture but it is in one of the interior removal posts. I thought it would be nice to have it still look stock back there while providing some bass fill.

 

I am working on this as well. I already have mine taken apart, I’ll post depth measurements tonight

You only need .15 cube ft. I am sure there is enough room for that. Depth is the only question

 

That 6.5 sub was just a quick example. I think a flatter sub without rolled edges would help clear the stock speaker grill.

 

I installed some kickers in the rear of my truck into the stock spots. I just cut away the plastic that the speakers screw into until it was big enough to fit and screwed it into it. It fits very well but I have one huge problem...the truck rattles. I could fix the covers with some foam padding between them and the speaker but the thing I cannot fix is the seatbelt dispenser. The seatbelt dispenser rattles from the inside of it. No way to fix it. I am thinking about just cutting away all the plastic and building a small box to go inside the stock speaker position...I believe the box would insulate it enough to not rattle the truck.

Going to try to fit the JL Audio 6w3 into this spot with a sealed box

 

Two questions:

Were the seatbelts still functional? Yes you can still pop the rear seat belt from the holder behind the sub.

What’s up with that bolt on the back of the console? Is that a modification? The arm rest touched the cone on the woofer so brackets was made to push it forward. I lost a the rear cup holder because the arm rest was pushed forward. The box was the bare minimum specs for a 12W3 air space wise so we have to toss some poly fill in it. It sounded great for what it was. But coming from a slot ported 12W7 with 1000/1 Slash amp it just wasn't enough for me. So I have since switched to (2) 13.5TW5's with HD750/1 with HD600/4 running (4) 6.5" JL Audio ZR components with another set of XR tweeters (6 total in my cab).

 

Good god, I must be old. a 12" in an extracab?

I have a crappy 10" (like 20 years old) sub in a crappy box I built myself in my doublecab (built behind the rear seat), and that's more than enough sound.

I had the same 10" in my 5 lug extracab, and that was pretty damn loud too. Just posted this in the other subwoofer thread, but I built that into the passenger side utility box under the rear seat. Had to cut a bit of the sheet metal around the opening, but I made a MDF plate to mount the sub that laid flush with the floor. Looked 100% stock with the seat folded down. Plus, I was able to put the access door back on when I sold it and you couldn't even tell I had a speaker there (kept the speaker).

Oh, I do remember having to pound down a bit of the inside of the cargo box to clear the magnet, but not much.

I measured the Space behind the rear speakers stock area .It’s about 4 1/2 inches, not enough for a 6 inch sub. But I haven’t been able to figure out if it would work with a spacer still keeping it behind the little plastic grill. I think there might be 2 inches between the plastic grill in the mounting area, but it sure would be cutting it close on flex for the sub.
