1-4 mile trips are terrible for the engine, it never gets up to normal operating temperature.

I would get a bike maybe?

This is totally normal. It's not only the acceleration but the idling at stop lights. Idling is 0 MPG and for that trip duration is probably a significantly amount of time which will pull it down fast.

your truck hasn't even got warmed yet before your trip is over. it's not going to be running at peak efficiency. try some long highway driving and see what you get. It's probably still learning and running in open loop. I average 24.5 mpg last night delivering pizzas with the 2.7 with choppy tires that need replacement. running 93 E0.

You are killing that engine doing short trips like that. You need to seriously take that truck out for a 50 mile drive on Saturdays to get rid of all that moisture you are creating within your poor engine.

I have the same truck, I’m tank averaging 15.4 mpg, 411 miles. 85% city. I run premium fuel. Pic is generally what I see on the highway at 60 - 65 mph. MPG really drops down 70 mph and up. I run 35 front 33 rear, cold.

Why are you running premium fuel?

Because the engine runs better on it, timing stays higher and you not susceptible to knock. I data-log and I can see what the engine is doing. Also, if an engine is constantly pulling timing to prevent knock on 87 this produces a less than ideal combustion, which can lead to more fuel dilution and carbon buildup. You get more efficiency, and with all things being equal more MPG. The cost difference may not equal out, but I don’t really care about $.

12-13 is normal when the engine is cold and you spend time sitting at lights. When you're on the highway going 45 or 55, look at your instantaneous mpg.

    Thanks everyone for the response.

Sounds like my mpg issue is normal for my typical driving conditions.

    To hit a few questions/comments.

    1. I’ll start taking longer trips on weekends to clear out any moisture and let the engine run at optimal temps for extended times. I can’t do much about the short daily trips. 1.2 miles each way to the gym. 3.7 each way to work. I’ll just make sure I’m getting those longer trips in over the weekend.

    2. I manually calculate my mpg every time i refill. Truck mpg estimates match my math each tank.

    3. i don’t typically run premium. Just gave it a try to see if there was any difference.

    4. I’d love to ride a bike to work if it wasn’t 90+ degrees with high humidity for 7+ months a year in Florida… plus elderly drivers and just Florida drivers in general (turn signals and speed limits are optional here). I’ll take bad fuel economy over being drenched in sweat at work or dead on the side of the road

    5. I’ll try to drive as light on the throttle as I can next tank, see what happens.

    6. Fuel costs are not the issue since I’m driving about 6k miles a year on average. To a lot of responders points, I’m more worried about the long term issues this may cause the engine or that there was an issue with my specific truck (based on these responses, truck is fine). Hunting season is close, so I’ll start doing a lot of longer weekend trips here soon anyway.

    7. Next time see if I can find a lifted Prius with an El Camino bed.

KCLV (knock correct learn value) will go up with premium. The change in power is going to be minimal, but technically there is a small benefit to using it.
