So at 13 mpg multiplied by 17 gallons, your gas light would be coming on around 220 miles.

Agreed. Lose the K&N, especially if yout mpg problem started after it was installed.

I calculate mine the same way moondeath does. I went from 19.6-21.2 mpg down to 17.2. Went from factory Dunlop's that weigh 36lbs to bfg at's that weigh 54lbs. That's a lot of extra weight to move at the axle! I'm thinking tire weight. I kept the dunlops and will remount them this spring. That'll tell for sure.

Yea I'll probably ditch my Nitto Mud grapplers when they wear out in favor of some A/T's. Will help a bit.

I recently road tripped 19 hours each way, most of it on I-40 (read flat and straight). I probably averaged 70 mph and consistently got 19+ mpg. On the way back my son joined me and we took shifts driving, a tank at a time. I woke up near the end of his shift and he was doing 85+. On that tank we got 14.5 mpg. :(

2014 TRD Sport, DCLB, 6K miles, bone stock. Never known a vehicle whose mileage was this sensitive to speed. But then I didn't buy it for its aerodynamics.

Never known a vehicle that got better MPG at 85 than it did at 40, so I'd say I'm confused by your statement.

Did we read the same post?

    He clearly said 70MPH = 19 and 85MPH = 14.5

To the OP you probably are accelerating and driving harder than you think. Keep the RPM below 2000 accelerating, and stay 70 or below and you should be averaging 18 to 20MPG easy on the highway.

This was my reference, and I seem to have missed the "THIS sensitive" part.

I have a friend who swears up and down his Subaru gets 4 MPG more at 80 than it does at 60, so I misread.

alot of good info, i drive 95% highway miles, i set the cruise at 70 to 77 and let it roll...keep in mind i put 82000 miles on it in 13 months. i try to go easy but its hard when every one else is doing 80.
i will clean the sensors and to be honest i use very little oil on the filter. i understand the issue there.
what do you think about removing the rear cats to help here, since they are behind the 02 sensors they shouldnt hurt. or would you think just let it be and see how bad it can get.
I had a H2 hummer getting 17 to 19 when i bought this truck. before you question it, i had converted it to a true two wheel drive and replaced the exhaust...

Cruise control will hurt some too because the system is always chasing the signal. I didn't mention in my post above that my son also had the cruise control on while doing 85+. I think I gave him the wrong kind of incentive when I agreed to switch drivers at the end of every tank. :p

Cruise control and high MPG don't go hand in hand IMO. Neither does Tacoma's and driving that fast on the freeway, if I stay at 2100 RPM instead of 1900 RPM, I can tell at the end of the tank when I fill up.

i understand the input, it makes since. i just didnt think it would be this far off.
so what do you think about the back two cats, will it help or hurt.

Dont go as fast. Lifts are not a good idea for mpgs Check the ECU because you might have disconnected something there

Ever since I slapped all my shit on mine I get 17mpg average no matter what I'm doing, unless it's off road in 4Lo in which case just dump gas in when the needle gets low and don't ask questions.

These trucks aren't mileage monsters in stock form because they're heavy bastards rolling on big fucking V6s (4L is rather monstrous for a 6 cylinder...many V8 engines displace less); when you start adding weight, height, wind resistance, and rolling mass through modifications things are gonna get worse.

Who cares anyway? It's a truck. If you want good MPG go buy a used Civic for 3 grand and putter around town in it til it dies at 400,000 miles.

Tread type doesn't matter nearly as much as total tire weight.

Winter blends suck. I'm thinking that's part of my problem.

That has a lot to do with it. I get about 10mpg running mexican gas, and about 15 mpg running non ethanol premium with 37's. Freeing up the intake or exhaust will decrease mileage, if you don't tune! It will make it run way rich, like 10:1 AFR with a k&n and catback exhaust. URD has a Maf calibrator that you can use to tune your motor and it works awesome if you have a wideband gauge or have a dyno handy. I tuned to 12.5:1 AFR above 3000 rpm with an engine load for the most power, and lean it out progressively from there on down. Around 2000 rpm's the O2 sensors keep it at 14.7:1 anyway, just smooth the transition.

Apparently the Nitto Trail grappler MT's 285/70r17 weighs 75 pounds. The duratracs weigh 54 pounds. May be time for a switch once these wear down.
