Whoa.. These mileages you guys are putting out here are horrible! I got 13 mpg with my gasoline burning 6L 3/4 ton running 305/70/R16's and 4.10s in the rear.

I'm starting to change my mind on wanting that 6cyl instead of my under torqued 4 banger if these are the norm and there isn't anything wrong with these vehicles in question.

Mybusters also showed that removing the tailgate also hurt gas mileage. The only thing that made it better was a mesh tailgate net (not the large nets). They speculated that the tailgate creates a cushion of air in the bed that allows airflow over the bed to be smoother. Removing or lowering the tailgate, removed that cushion of air. Using a tailgate net had the same effect as leaving the tailgate down with the exception of the mesh one. They supposed that the mesh one also creates enough cushion to allow airflow but increased mileage because it was lighter than the tailgate.

Here's the episode on tailgate up or down:
    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2400605931519184533

Also, here's an episode guide for tailgate up/down/removed, Tonneau cover, and tailgate mesh net:

i strickly do highway commuting for work every week with only ~10 clicks in city per week, running mildly aggressive winter tires, and doing the speed limit, i'm averaging no less than 600kms per tank (dont know the mile conversion). with the factory tires over the summer i could achieve 750 kms doing the exact same driving style (got one tank closer to 800 using high test). i've tested this many times to confirm that i was getting the same and it was usually all with in 25 clicks. my trip is mostly flat but not all the way.

You might want to check it over a couple of tanks. One tank can vary quite a bit from another depending on driving conditions. I've had tanks as high as 19 mpg or as low as 14mpg but over many tanks, I average about 15.5 mpg.

I drive about 450-475 miles a week so two tanks no problem.

you gotta remember that car companies test their "highway MPG" at an average speed of 48 miles an hour, so with that anything faster is gonna waste more gas, but I think it shouldnt be that low. Mines on 285's and im still getting 17mpg on 87 octane

That's not the case anymore as of 2008. They've added tests with speeds up to 80 mph with air conditioning turned on.

Try premium. It's more expensive but if it boosts your mpg, it can wind up being cheaper, especially if gas prices go up again. Plus, if possible, avoid ethanol. Ethanol can eat up to 13% of your gas mileage results. It looks cheaper at the pump but because it's so crappy on mileage, it'll actually cost you more.

Factory stock with the topper I got 17 1/2 mpg on my commute. Rims, tires, lift, & armor dropped it to 15 1/2. Now with the supercharger and 91 octane I'm seeing 13 1/2 to 15 1/2, depending on the weight of my foot. If I was that concerned about the mileage I'd drive my wife's Honda Fit to work (NOT!).

I have been getting 20 or better consistantly with mine. My last longer trip was from San Antonio to Northwestern Oklahoma and back. Almost 1300 Round trip with about 600lbs of weight going both ways and got 23mpg going up there and 22.6 coming back. I would definately say the tires had something to do with it?
