Depends on the state. Some allow exemptions for things like tint and front plates from out of state vehicles, but most are gonna get you.

That's what I was thinking, but gave the benefit of the doubt. Tacoma glass is like 78% front and 20% rear if I remember right.

AL does have a tint law though? 32%, but cops will give you some wiggle room so I always go with 30%.

OP you seem confused. Driver and passenger fronts are NOT tinted at the factory. You just happened to buy one that was tinted after the fact. Guessing you ticketed for the front windows?

I would think it would have to just be for the front windows. I dont think they can get you for the back ones. Dont quote me on that though.

Yeah because every SUV made nowadays would be getting tickets cause they come with factory tinted rear windows.

No you are right. Can only get you on the fronts. SUVS, minivans and pickups can have rear windows tinted.

That wouldn't make sense to do. What if it's a vehicle from another country? Clearly other countries don't have the same laws and standards. I'd lose my mind if there's some officer that wants to ticket me for being lifted though it's well within the limits of Mass. Some States don't require mud flaps either but others do

    Well then enjoy your ticket.

Because like ~45 states say "our state, our rules" wholesale on things like tint, and vehicle equipment in LETTER of the law. Enforcement is a different story. Some will allow you to not have the front plate because of the requirements in your home state, but that is about it.

And it isn't uncommon for international travellers to the US to just disregard tickets written to them. I've seen it happen. Get a speeding summons, and they just wad it up and toss it in the cupholder. Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear has a bit about it in one of the specials.

Just because something is legal in one state doesn't mean the legality carries with you across state lines. Marijuana is legal in California but if i drive there to pick some up and then drive back to Ohio, once I hit a state that does not consider it legal, then I'm at risk. Obviously there's the federal law too here so that one is more complicated.

Any officer that pulled someone over for tint or lift etc that is out of the states limits, has the ability to ticket it. They'll say that it's their state law and it's up to you to know the law before driving within that state.

So basically we need all states to just say hey all laws will be the same when it comes to vehicle regulation......

If all laws were consistent across all states, that would make everyones lives so much easier. I'm not holding my breath for that though.

One would think an officer would give some understanding and realize something minor like window tint can be overlooked if you're just passing through the state or something. But that's not always the case. A good friend of mine is a local officer for a neighboring city. He told me he ignores trucks with window tint but he'll get cars with excessive tint. That's just one officer though.

The way i thought it worked was that if it's legal in the state that the vehicle resides, then it's legal in every other state.
It would be crazy to have to modify things to drive through a state you don't live in.
Imagine having to get a license for every state that you drive in....

This is what I thought as well.

Also law enforcement for profit is such a bad idea.

I was pulled over in January for window tint and the officer asked me to roll my back windows down for him to check them. He thought they looked too dark. Then he seemed confused and ask if the rears were stock. I said yes. Then he proceeded to look at my fronts and I got ticketed for those. So you are right, I didn’t get ticketed for the rears. But i have a feeling the rears got his attention first.

O.P you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time,it will cost you more to fight the ticket than its worth, and the police and court house knows that, that's why they do it.

WOW guys thanks for all the comments :) just an update-I felt like I was TARGETED/PROFILED due to driving a nice truck, having a personalized Alabama tag etc.... I say that because the cop ignored people speeding by me to pull me over and give me a tint ticket! Anyway, I wrote to the local television station and explained everything and got a response....see uploaded file. I'm not sure if it will help anything, but I am hopeful and will keep you updated

So you're being interviewed because you got pulled over and ticketed for illegal window tint? I'm not advocating anything but if it's the law, it is what it is.
