    Open loop is just one of the ways that the ECU handles the AF ratio. there is Open loop, closed loop and WOT.

    I think open is just dumping in fuel to make it run, basically..i can't remember tho..

    closed is very specific amount calculated to the millisecond basically. (when your warmed up at Idle or with CC)

    WOT...no explaining needed :p


    i think..been a while since i have gone over that stuff..it'll need confirmed/corrected.

    4.10 gears, sliders, and lots of buttons.
    "Open Loop" means the Air/ Fuel ratio is dictated by what signals the ECU reads from the coolant temp, and MAF sensors. When cold, it runs rich to aid in warming up the engine safely. When "Closed Loop", the ECU now takes its info from the O2 sensors.

    Look into maybe getting an ecometer. Having a meter in front of you that shows your instant MPG will help you control your gas consumption. It also shows your overall mpg. I was averaging 18mpg last year, I'm at 19mpg this year.

    true.

    Would letting your truck warm up to operating temp before you drive it help negate this? Or are you just wasting fuel letting it idle?

    You burn fuel idling too so most likely it would yield same result MPG wise...

    I'm back. I have run 3 full tank cycles.

    1st tank 87 octane = I cleaned my MAF sensor and installed a paper air filter. = 13 mpg

    2nd tank 87 octane = Cleaned my K & N air filter with the K & N cleaner kit and re installed it. = 13 mpg

    3rd tank 91 octane = With K & N air filter. = 12.5 mpg

    I typically drive 3.5 miles each way to work and about 25 miles on the weekends on PCH highway.

    So what's next? Any ideas?

    A 3.5 mile commute is a gas killer.

    The only thing I can suggest is using cruise control as much as possible.

    Try un plugging your battery and cleaning off your MAF (mass air flow sensor) with some electronic cleaner. If you look at the little bulb and it's black, it should be orange. That has always helped me a little bit. I clean it after every oil change or so.

    You know i've been on the quest to boost mine back up as well. I'm getting around 220 a tank and i hate it.

    91 octane
    Rebuilt throttle body
    Clean MAF sensor
    New Filter
    Oil is only 2k miles old
    fresh plugs
    fresh wires
    fresh batt
    tires rotated, and road force balanced
    well lubed Zerks
    Light foot


    And i still am getting shit MPG

    Higher octane in our engines typically yields lower mpgs

    I get my best mpg with 85. But use 87 just because I don't want potential knocking and pinging

    91 is pretty much just used for much newer engines, turbo charged or high performance motors

    I wrote up a long post on this not too long ago... basically regurgitating what I learned on the Legacy GT forum
