My truck barely started this morning like I had left the lights on or something and I noticed that I cant hear my smog pump when turning off the truck.. Last night I changed the Fog anytime mod fuse holder with one with a thinner wire and I installed an ELM 32 OBD2 reader for use with dash command app for iphone.. Whats going on? Will the smog pump not working damage my truck in any way? My truck seems to be starting fine now but the smog pump is not going off.. Thanks..

Intermittent starting problems are semi-common in these trucks. I've had probably a half dozen slow starts. It could be related to your mods but it could also be the random rough start. Some folks attribute it to the fact that our trucks come with 2 different kinds of spark plugs in them.

Thats a relief!! all my mods connections are good to go!! Another question is I started my truck about 8 times in a row to see if the smog pump was supposed to work every time when shutting down.. is it suppose to work every single time or only when needed to pump clean air?

the fact that starting issues can be caused by the 2 different types.... or the fact that there are 2 different types.

The former, yeah thats laughable.... different plug manufacturer are not the cause.

The later is true... every 1GR has 3 denso and 3 ngk plugs.

Just passing along what I've read. Several folks that have replaced the stock plugs said they no longer have the issue.

Maybe your pump continued to run killing the battery and now the pumps toes up from running all night.

It is funny some think that Toyota using Denso and NGK plugs causes starting issues. They are the same Type plug ( heat range etc ) just different Manufacturers.

What's the real reason for the 2 'different' plugs then?

Mine doesn't work each and every time. Only if I start, let run for a minute or so, and turn off. If I just turn on and off, it doesn't pump...

The intermittent start is normal, my 08 and 11 both did it on occasion (when it was really cold out and had been sitting for sometime). Forget the explanations I got when I asked here, something with fuel pump.

I've heard that if it's been sitting, you should turn the truck to on for a second before starting to "prime the fuel pump". Still seems to be a far between intermittent problem. As far as hard starts, my 2011 did it once and my 2013 did it once the first month I had it. Tried again, and it started right up. Personally, I never allow time to "prime the fuel pump" when starting, so I find that reasoning hard to believe...

Toyota keeps two major suppliers on the hook for Quality Spark Plugs. Then if one has production issues the other can usually step up and cover the void. It is a cover your ass thing.

You shouldn't have to prime the pump unless there is a leak or leak by somewhere.

Ive had 2 starting issues I can think of in the year Ive had my '13. Once after a long cold night and the other after not starting it for a week. Both times I immediately turned the key to start it and the engine 'coughed' while turning over. Now I wait a second when starting in these conditions to let the fuel pump prime and have not had a problem since. Its common sense when you think about it. Nobody starts running a marathon when there alarm goes off at 5am. Give it a second to wake the systems up and let her have it.

The pump runs when the key is first turned on, stops then runs again as long as you are cranking the engine till it starts. Priming a pump that is all ready primed is a complete waste of time
