I actually think he should get what he paid for with all the option his previous truck had. It's a brand new truck. Now if he had it a few months and took it off road then it's a whole new ball game. I wouldn't settle for less.

MidnightRebel... I returned my loaner on Friday, I'm driving my Tacoma again. The detailed it inside and out, it looks great with one exception... my engine cover looks like someone used it as a sled over a gravel driveway! Not too thrilled about that.

My engine whined all the way out of the dealer's lot!

That is piston slap. The cyclinders are designed slightly oval. As the truck warms up the aluminum pistion expands and completely fills the combustion chamber. Its really a non issue thing from what i have read.

Assuming that was the cause I would imagine that there would have to be some way of measuring what is acceptable (noise) and what is not at the factory. If there is, then its one hell of a wide range, because some do not exhibit it, some exhibit it mildly and there are some that are just at WTF level.

This is a third video which is not as loud as the ones above:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFY-yPNuxWc

These trucks were feet away from each other, the three videos were taken today as I walked through the lot. Temp was about 80 degrees. I tried to video the temp gauge so that it could be seen that all of them were started cold.

If it were a normal behavior, I would imagine that they all should sound about the same, but some are just too loud...

Just curious if it's a "non issue thing" than why would so many dealers be working so hard to fix it, even going as far a replacing the engine with a new short block?

Hotrod, do you still keep making payments or is it going into escrow?

    Yeah it sounds bad.

BTW the dealer basically said, you have no DTCs, other Tacos in the lot do it, so its normal, there is nothing I can do for you....

I had them change the oil and filter. I have the old filter and sent an oil sample to blackstone. Will post results when I get them. I will open up the filter next weekend to see if there is anything unusal.

Yeah it does very, it shouldn't. My truck sounds like this last one, it goes away very fast. Part of the issue is that toyota no longer pairs pistons with the closest measurement of the combustion chamber. Down step in quality? Yeah, but its not going to have anylonger term issue. Alot of earlier 1gr have the same issue. GM has it worst but haven't had long term problems associated with it. These pistons have a short skirt that is teflon coated. Paired with slightly oval heads they slap until warm.

Yesterday mine didn't want to turnover the ignition. Took 4 tries and then it was making a similar sound for a bit. Made me nervous and dropped it off at the dealer.

Not saying that some don't have issues, but this thread is causing mass hysteria. Like the Unintended AccelerationBS.

I bought my 2014 4x4 V6 with 1700 miles (New/Used) certified. Asked them a dozen times why it was traded in...no excuse.
I downloaded the Toyota app on my iPhone and looked at the service history and the app showed the engine was making a noice. They determined it was the oil pump so they replaced it. I did not know of this app until I purchased the vehicle. I willl be keeping an ear out for the "noise" on mine.

I've been following this thread also and moved over to 0w-30 Synthetic in addition to the 93. The oil change from 5w-30 to 0w-30 made no difference. Running 93 seems to have taken away the knocking under load thankfully but did not address the noise issue. Finicky trucks man....

Yeah wonder if they have listened to other trucks when they are first started? The audio recordings sound like an (fill in the blanks) engine to me. You would think all the hype the engines would be scattered all over the highway before they made 30 thousand miles. I think I'll go out and record my tractor running.

I just spoke to my local dealer and he suggested I leave it over night for a cold start tomorrow. He is going to give me a loaner for the day and see what they think is going on. I'll keep you all posted to my local dealers findings also. Good times....

If your 2013 does not make noise I would cancel order and just wait.... No point jumping to shallow water feet first...

Difference is that unintended acc. was never proven as far as I know. I never saw a video of one with stuck accelerator.

This is different, I could go to the dealer right now and record multiple trucks with the noise if I like, as I did with the videos posted above.

I don't think it should cause mass hysteria, but at least give the heads up to those looking to buy a Tacoma. This may be normal, who knows! We are not getting any answers from corporate....

Tell 'em you want a 4Runner engine/short block. Same 4 L. Same Tranny. So if this was a NORMAL engine noise, 4Runners should make it too.!!
