I've got a 13' with 18k miles on it. Been making this noise since day 1, thought it was normal. Subing to see if anyone comes to any real conclusions here.

I've had my truck back from the dealership for two weeks now. I've put 500+ miles on it, and every morning has been at or below freezing--a few mornings down in the low teens.

My front cover/water pump/oil pump assembly was replaced. The noise has not reappeared.

Our tacoma v6's are still noisy engines, but nothing like the video i posted before.

    Screw that!

The burden of proof is on them to prove you mistreated your engine - not to prove you treated it well.

I suggest you get a lawyer ASAP.

Have them pull the serpentine belt first thing, that rules out all the "accessories" that it sounds like.

I actually told them that when I took mine in, their answer was that they couldn't because its not part of the troubleshooting guide/steps from Toyota.. ..... so their troubleshooting was to make a visual inspection, check for DTCs...... thats it......

I received my results from BlackstoneLabs, it does not help much right now, after one or two more oil changes it will be valuable as I will have something to compare the new results.

Basically I had a lot of metal residue and silicone, but since its a new truck its something that they consider normal, so I will need to do another test after at least two oil changes, by then those numbers should be considerably lower.

Still convinced that this is not normal, even more after listening more to co-workers 13' Tacoma, and reading the post above of the problem being solved.....

    Sub'd.

I just traded my '11 with 104,xxx miles on it for the exact same truck in a '14. I am going to have to listen to my truck at lunch today to see if it makes the noise on start up.

I found this thread because last night when I shut my truck off it made a grinding noise like something was still rotating. It made the same noise this morning when I got to work so I was a little concerned. It only has 800 miles on it.

Are you saying to pull the belt and start the engine to see if it still makes noise

    Silicone or silica?

Yep. That's exactly what my dealership did. It cut straight to the chase. I got a call within 45 minutes that the noise was coming from the engine.

Epa4wd--in this instance I would be pretty pushy, after all, you just bought a brand new truck for big $.

tsub345.... be aware that the air pump cycles both when your engine goes from fast idle to slow idle on initial startup and it also cycles as if it is purging just after the key is turned off. Both of these are normal.

MGMTacolover55..... 2 repair attempts then the engine was pulled and a short block installed.... it still makes the noise! I'm on week 2 after filing for Lemon Law.

Hotrod-I listened to my truck a couple of times at startup today and didn't here the same noise in the video, but I will keep an eye (or ear on it). Trdsurgie let me know that the noise that I am hearing on shutdown is my smog pump.

My 2014 makes this noise. But, unlike the OP, my noise is very faint. I can hear it but I doubt anyone else would think it was out of the ordinary. It is the same noise though. Sounds exactly like the video. Hoping their is a resolution to this before mine becomes a problem.

So I had to play musical cars in the driveway this morning and I let mine run to defrost the window. After the engine went through its usual start up I could hear the same noise as the video but mine stopped after about five minutes.

Whatever makes the noise commonly stops when the engine begins to warm up.
