OK, last July, 2014 I took my 2004 Tacoma in for an inspection. Garage guys says "you gotta see this!"
He won't even put it on his lift b/c he's afraid the truck will break in half! There's no frame from the rear wheels back.
That's when I learned from the garage guy of the massive recall on these bad frames. He told me it's been going on for years. Only problem, I never got any notices. I called the dealer, and he asked the year of my truck, and then told me I was out of luck. My recall expired. Sorry, nothing they will do.
However, I was able to prove that ALL my recall notices went to the wrong address. My wife called Toyota HQ, and had them dead our mailing address. They had it wrong. Not only was it wrong, but the recall notices got returned to sender.
So, the truck sat in my driveway beginning in July, through August, Sept, Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan 2015, and Feb 2015. Finally after endless phone calls and arguments, Toyota agreed to settle. They will pay for a new frame. Told me to bring the truck in in April since they had no fames available. But, they will not pay for or give me a rental. I'm on my own.
Mid April 2015, I have the truck towed on a flatbed to the dealer since 1. All the brakes froze due to not being driven, 2. Had no inspection sticker, 3. Was unsafe to drive even a short distance.
The dealer looks at it, says I'll have to pay ~$1000 out of pocket for things like an emer brake, muffler, water pump, timing belt, etc. I agreed. So, I patiently wait, wait, and wait some more. They finally call me this past Thursday, Aug 20, 2015. He tells me my parts are in, and they're ready to work on my frame. However, the service manager also tells me the rust is far worse than he thought it was in April, and it will now cost me $6000 to get my truck repaired. This is $6000 on top of the frame they are paying for!
Obviously the rust spread from the frame to neighboring parts. In addition to that, I'm sure the brakes, calipers, shocks and muffler rusted due to the fact I was unable to drive the truck.

My contention is, none of this is my fault. I purchased the truck in good faith (first owner). They sold me a truck with a soft frame. When Toyota first learned of this, it was up to them to notify me. They never did. As a result of the truck sitting for 14 months, rust has caused even more damage. Damage Toyota now expects me to pay for.
I'm planning on meeting with the owner of the dealership this week, to see if we can find some middle ground. This is a horrible position to be placed in.

These things happen when you depend on others to service your truck

As far as being notified I never got any either.

Then I was aware of a problem long before the recall after fixing so many of these trucks.

Even the buy back at 1 1/2 times of the kelly price was not enough to give up my truck .

I just fixed the frame if it gets worse I will make a new one .

I have it most of the way done already.

I venture you are unable to do any of the other work yourself.

Get an itemized quote for what the 6k covers. Something seems fishy there.

Second, call corporate and give them a heads up on what is going on. The dealership should be filing a warranty claim with Corporate and it should be paying for the frame and labor. I thought this would include any mounting hardware needing replacing but not sure. While you have them on the phone, find out what the warranty claim will cover and not cover.
