In my case when that happened, the shop manager couldn’t believe that was possible as so many tacos are worked on all the time. He stood his ground denying what I was claiming. He even had me get my torque bar from the truck to check if it was out of calibration. After they checked it, it was spot on and not understanding why I just didn’t bring it back in to have them fix it I said why would I? I saw what was done and I loosened the nuts back down to 84lbs and NOW WE HAVE STRETCHED BOLTS TO FIX. I told him the integrity of the bolts have been compromised and at some point down the road the possibility of a wheel flying off is real and putting others on the road at risk of eating my tire as it comes through their windshield. His response,...”likely hood of that happening is rare”. So he trusts his thinking with my life, smart.
Meanwhile, as he and I are debating what happened to my lug nuts, others in shop management are looking over the video of the tech torquing down my wheel nuts and noticed he grabbed the torque bar for the Tundra. Everyone is now apologizing and they replaced all my wheel bolts with new ones.

Well yeah people buy the up-sells all the time. When I was at a dealership probably 8 out of 10 people would agree to all the shit I was selling them. You would get the odd people in that actually worked on their vehicle or the "my buddy can do it cheaper" person.

Just don't let them try to convince you, you need new muffler bearings (Not covered) or self-adjusting spark plugs (Not covered) .. :D

The dealers in my area try to charge so much for basic maintenance. I was quoted over $1,100 for oil change, brake fluid flush, transmission flush and differential fluid change.

That’s gonna be a no from me, boss.

My closest dealer has 2.7 stars on dealer rater dot com.
I know everyone can have good and bad experiences. I got a little bit to figure it out.
Definitely will do my own work when I can. There is a good independent mechanic close to work that's been open for 70 years in the same family I'll go there for non warranty work I can't do.

Then that explains their pressure tactics. It’s all about their own interests, personal paycheques and quotas and not the customer.

Just had my 20k maintenance and they said there was corrosion on the battery terminal. They could clean it for $45. I said, "$45 to clean the terminals?", she said, "and they put protection on it." I declined. That protection is usually just some petroleum jelly. I cleaned it at home with an old tooth brush and some baking soda water. And when I opened the hood to do this I noticed the oil cap sitting on the battery terminal. Yup. They forgot to put the oil cap back on. Needless to say I went back to the dealer and they redid the oil. :(

When they high-pressure guy (it's always the finance guy/admin guy at the end of the sale) tries this I just tell them there is no way I am buying any warranty at all, let's just save some time and breath. It never works, they still try. Then I remind them how just an hour ago the sales guy on the floor was telling me how reliable the vehicle. And so I ask him, "if it's so reliable, why do I need another warranty, doesn't Toyota stand by their product?" That tends to work better...
