I also never punch it. And I usually shift into the next gear at about 2000 rpm. And I drive at a constant speed on the freeway. However, for the first 1000 miles I am still getting just above 15 mpg. I talked to a Toyota mechanic and he said this seems to be the going rate for new 4WD's.

I also have the a/c on 90 percent of the time since it is still in the 90's here in SoCal. This could be affecting gas mileage.

Don't panic, my '06 got the same until the engine broke in around 25,000 miles and then I started getting between 19-21 mpg in the city. It's important to remember that any modifications i.e. lift kits, over size tires, etc. will take mpg into the toilet.

I saw a news report on doubling gas mileage. Yes 30mpg for our trucks in city driving.:D
OK I tried the trick a few times on one tank and my MPG went from 18 to 22. I will be more religious about it when the weather gets cooler down here in Miami. Today 90+ in October.
So here is the trick form the hymilers club.
    Turn off the motor.
If you see a stop sign ahead or a street light turns yellow, just turn off the motor and coast to a stop. Wait for the light to change, then start and go.
It works!!! They did a 5 mile test on a Ford Expedition and it jumped from 12 to 20 mpg on a TV news report (20/20, Dateline or something like it).

You dont need to drive like a grandma, but you must be doing something to get that crappy mpg. I would have to work really hard to get 15.1mpg. I get around 17-18 streets/highway. All highway I get around 22mpg. this is with AC on constantly.

I noticed my MPG had dropped, it got colder and my PSI was 25-26 in my tires. I put them up to 31PSI and went to Carmel . I did 66% Highway and 33% in town and got 21.95MPG average. Before I had 18MPG on the same exact driving ratio. The highway was 65-70MPH.-Rich IMG_7608_edited-1Large1_edited-2_6a3fdb281b9971ae68a16719ae02d85303706644.jpg

The best I calculated was 21.6 mpg all highway on one tank. I bought a GPS and found out that the speedo on my truck was almost if not 2 mph off reading my speed faster then I was actually going. This means I was racking up millage that I was not actually traveling which means my mpg calc were not correct. I just lifed my truck and put 285's on her and now my speedo is dead on with the GPS and other radars. My last fill up was half highway half stop and go with a mpg of 15.3.

Are you takeing into account the larger tires? There is about 7.5% size difference, and your ODO will be off that ammount. Add 7.5% to your odo reading, then divide by the gallons, and that should give you a more accurate mpg figure.

For some reason I don't believe that...since it uses the same amount of gas to start it as it does to just let it run for 5 minutes. This is what one of the guys at Ford told me but still it seems quite logical.
Besides that, all that starting and stopping must be TERRIBLE for the engine.

I get 15-16, but I'm "a pissed off teenager." I also have lots of stop signs in my area so I'm sure that helps. If I take it on the highway, I get around 20-21 MPG. It just depends on how fast I want to get to my destination (which is usually around 80-85).

I think that if I were to keep my RPM's below say 2.5K or even 3K (chuckling because I know it wont happen), I would get better gas milage.

Keep it under 2K and it could possibly short circuit your mind with mileage.
It's ok, I'm a pissed off teenager too and I could probably get 18 or so easily. but my freeway speed is higher than yours...you really only hit 80-85 on the freeway? You're not a pissed off teenager, you're only a mildly angered if not just frustrated teenager. :p
