I just did an oil change with a $15 cost
Pennzoil Platinum purchased at Walmart $24
    Oil filter $6
    Pennzoil $15 rebate

    Total cost $15.

FYI Pennzoil rebate ends in August

You won the lottery with that deal! You should take the little lady out tonight for some disco dancing to celebrate.

New oil is new oil. Our turn of the millennium technology V6s don't care if you are running Super tech or dumb enough to run Amsoil.

I asked my brother in law what he used on his perfect running 2003 4Runner V6 that must have 400K by now. . .he said "cheapest conventional I can get, usually Chevron". . .

Let me be the first to say "thank you!"

FWIW - I always do my own oil & filter changes, and together they usually run me about $35. $7.75 for a -YZZD3 filter, and ~27 for synthetic oil from Wally World.

Rebates are a pain in the buttocks. I don't usually bother with them, and will not buy products that feature them, unless they return $25 or more. I still hate them when they return $25+, but the PITA / reward ratio is good enuf' for me.

Haven't heard the Ole Quaker State Pennzoil gripe since the 70s! Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30 and OEM filter every 5k or 6 months, life is good. Rebates are indeed a pain in the arse, I don't bother...

I don't do rebates unless they're instant. I encourage everyone else to do the same. I'm way old enough to remember the Pennzoil/Quaker State episodes. It was real.

Agree! I remember it all too well growing up in NE Penzy. Times and Pennzoil have thankfully changed.

Does any car really die from bad motor oil these days? I ran the cheapest stuff for a decade until it got hard to find dino oil and i switched to Kirkland synthetic on coupon. 18 years and no problems yet.

    minor tweaks
Pennsylvania oils (Quaker State specifically) got a rep in the 60s and 70s for gunking up motors, it wasn't unwarranted and prematurely clogged PCVs were a common symptom. Then there was a recall of quaker state oil due to bad additives that didn't thin down in cold weather. It was a bad time in the quaker state and the rep back then wasn't unwarranted. It was the first motor oil recall I'd ever heard of.

It didn't help the regions oil rep when Pennzoil bought out Quaker State, most people would have rather seen it disappear. All that is a thing of the past now but some folks who were around back remember the sludged up motors and prefer to buy something else.

Yep, I pulled valve covers that were caked so bad you had to spoon them out before a proper cleaning. Pulling an intake manifold would reveal another mess. Crazy times....

back in the early 2000's I worked at a ford dealer ship and we had a motor in the service dept. with copies of the oil change log book all caked up that had been there for years and its why they didn't run Pennzoil, but the Chevy dealership down the road was a proud Pennzoil shop. likely why they kept it around
