    Hello Folks,
I'm 1 month into my brand new '18 taco and I am not happy with the gas consumption and the lack of power to get me up over Parley's Canyon in Park City, UT. It just can't seem to find a happy place. It will either go into third and speed up to much or drop back into 4th and not be able to keep up even with the ECT button on! Is this normal behavior or is there something I can do?
Generally I am very disappointed so far.
    Any guidance would be appreciated!

I was in the exact same shoes as you one month after getting my truck. Couldn’t break 16mpg. And then one day I started getting 20mpg even on AT tires. I really do think these engines learn as we drive.

Welcome to the forum. For instant satisfaction get the OV tune, if you don’t want to spend $800 then drive it for around 5,000 miles and it will settle down.

Your truck is still learning you (and breaking in for that matter). Drive it the way you want to and it will start putting the pieces together.

Depends on your drive? Through a city/town or highway? I only get 13 through town will lots of hills and lights. Also put your foot down. This engines sweet spot is in the higher revs and if it's gear hunting use s mode and bump it down to the lower of the two gears it's bouncing between. It will smooth out in a few thousand miles as it learns your driving patterns.

u look to have a lift and bigger tires and the weight of a topper. Id say 4.88 gears with that set up if in mountains. I am not familiar with the truck at all and just traded in my 16 Colorado diesel today and I can tell you it would go through those mountains no issues and hold the gears but it is a different deal. I just got a 18 trd pro today and I live in Oklahoma and I drove it 40 miles from dealer to my house at 65 to 75 going through some some towns. I got 18.8 mpg. I then drove around town tonight just cruising checking it out and got 17 all city for 15 miles. Mine is stock and although no mountains was some hills and it doesnt not hold like my diesel but I had no issues and is just different than the diesel. Mine actually seems to be much spunkier than my diesel was but not as smooth on hyw at high speeds because it never dropped from 6th. So far I likve the power train in mine but again I just got it today. In another week ill have about 600 miles on it and see how it is doing.

Same experience here...stuck at 16 mpg’s for over a year. I put mostly all city miles for that first year. Then or better on hwy. if I don’t drive like an a-hole, it is say to get 20 mpg’s combined. But that was only after 7-8K miles.

Seeing 20mpg on my 18 TRD OR. Granted that's from the readout. Got about 18-19 on my 2nd gen.

Current tank shows 13 MPG mostly city driving. 6MT. Nearing 8K miles.

I can imagine that kills the mpgs. City driving a m/t can suck sometimes. When I go to the mountains in new england i see a sharp drop. My 4-banger keeps it down on flat highways though.

Use a light foot and you will get what's on the window sticker, in my experience anyway.

This is a terrible area for MPG. I'm hoping as the engine breaks in it starts to improve. Right now I'm getting about 17 MPG highway on a good day.

The 2GR-FKS is a dog. It does fine in the 4K-6K range, but normal driving doesn't happen there.

In spite of that it can only break 20 MPG if you are maintaining speed on like a flat or rolling country road (<65 MPH).

    Kind of disappointing.

Thats a bummer. The SF area is intense though, especially with a standard.
Hopefully the ECU learns the driving habits sooner than later and adjusts.
