I don't think you are going to get much over 15mpg driving over Parleys. Driving the freeway to and from Salt Lake I can still get 21mpg with 265/75/16 tires but as soon as I head into the hills it drops dramatically.

I have been pretty disappointed with the lack of low end power from the Tacoma. The transmission gear ratios are not optimized for this engine either. Coming from a supercharged Tundra it has been a challenge to get use to. Before the Tundra I had a 2008 supercharged Tacoma. Sometimes I feel like I am driving my 1998 Tacoma 4cyl.

I have a friend with a 2015 Tacoma on lease, and he'll be upgrading soon. I told him "If you want a truck that feels like a 4cyl but is actually a 6, seems to have turbo lag but has no turbo, and sounds a little like a diesel but isn't, then the Gen 3 Tacoma is the truck for you."

That was my experience driving 2 separate 17s. I don't feel that way on the 18. It seems like a different truck. It doesn't have a ton of power in the low end, but it's not like the lag I felt driving the 17. I almost didn't get one, but glad I tested out the 18 and ultimately purchased one.

Good to hear it worked out. It seems like it's a bit of a crap shoot with these trucks, like they are a bit inconsistent in terms of performance from truck to truck.

Please note everyone, if I come across as a Taco hater, I'm certainly not. Despite it's quirks, I still do like my truck.

At 75mph I get about 16mpg. At 60 I get low 20s. I usually drive like a grandpa in it.

I'm only 750 miles in, but I've been averaging anywhere from 19-23 mpg. Loving it so far.

Brand new owner here, have about 900 miles on it; '18 DCSB 4x4 SR5. The onboard computer is currently reading 22.4MPG with mixed city/HWY driving while being VERY gentle on the pedal. The 1st tank was closer to 19MPG fwiw. It could be my imagination but it feels a little peppier now than it did initially. I am learning that staying in the throttle a little bit to accelerate doesn't appear to kill MPG's to bad and really the truck isn't as slow as I thought as long as you get the RPM's up a bit.

having the BF Goodrich all terrain tires(heavy) and an aftermarket lift kit wont enchance your MPGs, FYI

I've had many new vehicles and there was never any break in to speak of. The first tank was always bad because of the idling for prep the dealer does I assume. After 2nd or 3rd tank the mileage never changed for me. Same with my Tacoma so far. Granted I am under 10k miles still so maybe? I'm averaging 18.6mpg or so as per my fuelly account. Dash is always 0.5mpg optimistic. I am at 3600 ft ASL so probably 10-15% less power/compression up here.

One thing I've noticed any head winds and the mileage plummets on the highway.

That's the key... Learning together... No worse than 20 so far. I never go off the computer, always do the math at fill up. It is the most accurate way.

yeah, wait for the engine to loosen up. I have 45K miles on now and the truck makes me smile every time I eat a Colorado or a Canyon from a red line. Hang in there. You will love it. I get about 20 mpg with AT tires. When I drive like I stole it I get mid 17 to low 18mpg

I also traded a 6.7 cummins on 35’s in for this 18 mt. Cummins usually got 14-16 in town and 16-18hwy. This Tacoma is getting 17+ in town and high 18-high 19 hwy. Speed limit here is 70-75 so it’s not unusual to run 75-80. The digital mpg readout it usually .1 high or dead on and I am tickled with mpg’s so far with 2500 miles on the clock.

    To everyone who said
"Just use manual mode" or "get the shift sense pro".

SHIFTING IS ONLY PART OF THE PROBLEM.

What you guys aren't understanding is the torque converter is limited to only 40% of
max load stock. And it's in full lock in every gear.

The OvTune totally changed that. The truck holds gears longer, and ADJUSTS all other engine parameters to accomodate it. So instead of going up a hill in fourth, at 4mpg and decelerating, you can do it in 4th, hold the gear or accelerate at 12-15mpg.
You can accelerate in 6th too, albeit slowly.

Don't waste time on that other shit.

Last year, we drove around Cortez, Durango, and the Enchanted Circle. I was easily getting in the 20's driving around the mountains. With a Topper, Air Dam removed, AT tires. Geared down to drive down the hills, didn't shift too much....

How, you ask? I wasn't driving real fast. Speed kills mpgs in these trucks. It's hard to get 20mpgs on flat land at 70mph, unless it's really flat and it's just highway. 65mph is better, 55mph is pretty good.

75-80mph will kill mileage in the Tacos.

OVtune changes this. If you're not satisfied with the way your vehicle drives stock, it's a viable option. No it's not bullshit.
Yes I know ~800 bucks is a lot of money.

There are also those that love their 3rd gens completely stock, and that's awesome.

    Cheers

I'll agree with what others have said; having just driven Parley's Canyon a couple of weeks ago in a rental Rav4, you're not doing to get great mileage up that stretch. The Rav4 that I was in did it in 3rd gear too, at 65, and had trouble maintaining that. It's a steep climb, at speed. Without turbos or a supercharger shoving air down the intake you're going to see some power loss at that elevation, too, which will make the truck struggle a little more. And if you're doing any driving on the interstates out there you're doing probably doing 85-90mph, which is about 30mph out of the sweet spot for mpg's on most trucks.
