I sort of agree and I sort of dont. The tuning and the purchase of the truck are 2 separate entities and the "meat" of the deal goes to 2 different piggy banks. I would have certainly thought about the re flash\tune much harder if it was around $300-$400. Maybe I am crazy for thinking that but thats almost more than double my 2002 tundra Unichip, 2010 Tacoma Unichip, 2004 Titan UpRev and my Yamaha ECUnleash reflash was.

I assume this isn't an issue for the manuals, correct? Does the ECU learn the same way?

I got 20 MPG from day 1 on mine, I doubt there was much for the Truck to learn.

Other than knock correction, fuel trims, idle air flow etc I'd have to agree (all stuff that Mat from OVtune has educated us on). It does take a while for these things to settle in though. My mpgs were lower right out of the gate when the truck was new, but leveled off after a short "break in" while still on the stock tune.

Those would seem to be everyday type of adjustments though do to the grade of fuel, outside temperature, altitude and so on, not so much the truck learning your driving style.

True, but it does take a while for the truck to adjust. The only reason I know is because after flashing a tune file, the truck's behaviour will change over time and miles. Other than subtle differences in driveability, you can watch things change with techstream or a OBD scanner like OBD fusion. Knock correction actually takes quite a while.

800 bucks is a lot of money, no doubt. No, you shouldn't have to spend that money to "make the truck right".
If you're happy with the way your truck drives, well there's no point in getting the tune IMO.
If you're not happy with the way your truck drives, OVtune is an option.
You can spend a lot more money on shit you don't really need.
One thing I wouldn't do though, is base your opinion/decision on buying OVtune on what random ppl think who aren't tuned and know very little about it. Not calling out anyone in particular.
The review thread will help in that regard, then make your own decision :)

Honestly for me, it was a choice between spending the 800$ or lose a couple grand trading in the truck.

    That's how disappointed I was.

Now I wouldn't trade it unless I was forced to by financial constraints.

That's how much better it is.

3/1 lift though. that 6 in lift is killing the mpg.

yeah I bet. Had my first run to work today in mine just got here. 40 miles. I live in somewhat of a valley per say in Okla and coming to work it does not like any hills at all and shifts. I tried cruise for most the time and switched back to manual also. But I got 18.1 today. Not great and if id of not used cruise probably could of gotten 20. That said it isn't near as good on hyw as my diesel Colorado for just plain stay in 6th and do 65 to 80 and not shift. This went to 3rd one time when I hit one hill and gave it gas. Nothing bad in general and I can see where many would be frustrated in the mountain type area. It is all give and take good and bads and plusses and minus over other trucks. We will see what I think more in about a month with it. If it is something I don't like ill dell it for a 19 model truck but if I do id end up having to go full size and really don't want to do that. Sure like the truck a lot and have no intentions on that happening but just a point that if it isn't something that works then work on getting something else.

I went from a 2011 Tundra Rock Warrior to a 2018 Tacoma TRD. Tundra I averaged like 13 to 14 miles to the gallon. Tacoma was getting about 15 to 16.
Right at 2000 miles on new Tacoma i started getting 20 mpg on highway and getting better. Shifting has changed quite a bit at 2000 miles as well. All that Looking for gears has almost stopped and transmission has smoothed out quite a bit. I drove with ECT on for about first 1500 due to the searching for gears at low end but that all seems to have learned how I drive I guess ( like a grandpa ).

well i can say we had wind this weekend and it is not the tacoma friend. haha. Killed my Hyw mpg for sure. The diesel Colorado was much better on hyw and wind but that is because it was a diesel. Trade offs over a gas engine for sure. I am honestly happy to be back in the gas engine even though i cant hold the hyw at 75 and 80 and not drop a gear. Only been a week on my new truck and i like it a lot and coming to work at 70 mpg for 40 miles today i got 19.5. My other truck would of did about 29 mpg but again there is trade offs to diesel engine. I am happy so far with my new tacoma.

I started commuting an hour to work every day. I've been getting 21mpg freeway+city mix, or 19.5 if I take all side streets.

Just ran the first tank through my 2018. 20.1 - 325 miles or so before I decided to fill. I'm dang happy. Would occasionally get 15 in my 2nd gen and with some luck get it up to 18. I've been revving the 2018 quite a bit to break it in, but never letting it go over 4k.
