Just telling the OP he is not alone with POOR fuel mpg. There are no shortages of posts about mpg being poor and transmission shifting on this forum. I love the smaller truck of the tacoma. I loved my full size 5.3 2016 GMC Denali power and 18+ mpg as well. It didn't struggle to go down the highway at 60+ mph either. It was a smooth riding truck and transmission was butter as well. I didn't wait till the truck had 10k miles on it to see if it might get a little better either. Your truck isn't going to magically improve one day down the road. I think people like to make excuses for the truck. I like the truck, but it does have an engine and transmission that leaves much to be desired. Some folks have low standards is all.

So to answer your question OP. This is exactly what this truck does. You are SPOT on with what you have noticed. Either live with the truck or find one that doesn't do so poorly in those areas.

Edit: Some folks are drama queens is all.

See what I did there? Not cool. Argue the point, don't insult the person.

If everything was so great with the 2016 GMC Denali why don't you still have? Lets do the math bought Denali in 2016, u now own a 2017 Tacoma = only 1 year of ownership of the GMC= doesn't add up to the truth.

I live in the mountains like the OP. I get good gas mileage going downhill :D

I drive up hill about 3,000 feet to go home at the end of the work day, and rarely see double digits. 9.6 mpg is typical. If I don't rev it into the power band I roll backwards (okay, that's just how it feels).

275/70/17 tires with a Manual Transmission. Thinking about 4.88 gears, and/or OV Tune...

This? 3 weeks ago, on a 250 mile round trip on flat farm land highways and highways through the valley (no climbing), we were getting 27 mph. This weekend, we just did the same trip, and I got 31 mph so, winter fuel looks like it's on the way out.

Last time we took the taco out, was about 4 weeks ago and we were getting about 17/18 mph on highway. We usually see about 20 mph on the same roads. Haven't gotten gas in about 5 weeks, so I'm guessing in about another week or so when I have to get gas, we should have summer blend in there and start getting better mileage again.

This, plus full break in should help?

Anyone in Cali have comments about their gasoline? some have been saying that since Cali went with their mandated blend that no other state mandates, mileage and performance have been lower.

As I read through this thread I really hope my MPG gets better. Cleared 4000 miles on the ODO today. Completed a 400 mile round trip drive. 200 miles there was 70mph with cruise control on I95 here in Florida (i.e., mostly flat). Averaged ~20.5 mpg. On the way back cruise control was set at 75 most of the way. MPG was ~17.7. Admittedly I was hoping the return trip home would have been better. Auto in D just plain sucks. Any bit of incline and there is all this shifting that I thought was being held way too long; keeping those RPMs up in the lower gears was just a fuel economy killer. Yeah, disappointed...
