If it matters to anyone, I have a 2002 cavalier with over 255k on a 2.2 liter ecotech....I change it every 3k with conventional dino oil from walmart..Supertech 5w30, could I go longer on it, probably, but its been working for me for the last 15 years and I dont plan on changing my OCIs on it now., and she runs like a top to this day......Anyone else have any high mileage vehicles? What oil brand do you use? And whats your OCIs?

    It's really pretty simple.

    http://www.blackstone-labs.com/free-test-kits.php

    $28

Get actual real numbers. Use those to see if the recommended OCI works for your driving conditions, if you need to change sooner, or if you're pissing away your money changing too often.

Which is nice, but doesn't mean anything. Could have easily done the same with longer, OCIs if a couple of simple tests gave you the green light.

I agree, do it how you wish. Its your time and $.

But this topic I'll chose science over old wives tales and anecdotal evidence.

I'll see myself out now. No sense in wasting my electrons on this topic any more. :hattip:

That is actually a good question, the Powertrain Warranty is what 60,000 Miles right. Toyota Care would have to do 1/2 as many Oil Changes on all the vehicles they sell versus having a few extra warranty claims so it probably works out financially in their favor by recommending every 10K.

When you get the big extended warranty package, like the ones being used to compensate for transmission issues for example, do they make you exchange your owners manual for one that has a shorter OCI requirement? Since you have them on the hook beyond 60k now?

    Probably not, right?

Anyone not willing to do a lab test has no basis to dispute OE recommended procedures. Its all speculation.

Plus those high mileage vehicles would have done great on 3000 mile / 3 month intervals. So why not that OCI? It's what I learned from my father back in the early 80's. Why switch to 5000?

My truck came with a lifetime powertrain warranty. My lifetime. Non-transferrable.

Same warranty book as the others. 10k OCI.

No, of course not, but usually people pay big money for those extended warranties.
