My 2009 TRD Crew Cab 5’ bed came with 16”.
I am considering upgrading to a 17” TRD rim with 265/70/17 Falken Rubitrek. Any opinions or suggestions? Would 265/65/17 look much different than 265/70/17? I’m considering both sizes but I need some experienced opinions on the look between 265/65 and 265/70.

What size do you currently have on your truck?

A 265/65/17 is virtually the same overall width and height as a 265/70/16 which is a factory option on some Tacoma's. The only difference is a 17" hole in the middle vs a 16" hole. And the amount of rubber between the road and bottom of the rim. Some Tacoma's come with 245/75/16's. They are the same height as 265/70/16's, but about 3/4" narrower.

Lots of guys with 16" wheels move up to 265/75/16 which is the same width, but about 1" taller. And a 265/70/17 is the same height and width, except for the larger hole in the middle and once again how much rubber is between the road and bottom of the rim.

You can get the same tire width and height with 15", 16", 17", 18" or even 20" wheels. The only difference being the size of the hole in the middle. And since smaller wheels leave more rubber between the road and rim they will ride softer and be better off road. Larger wheel sizes give a harsher, more sports car ride and will lean less if driven aggressively on the road. Although the difference 1" makes isn't earth shattering. Compared to a 16" wheel an 18" or 20" wheel would be noticeable

You can get the same look with either wheel size. I'd look at what the cost of wheels and tires cost in each size and make my decision based on that. I'd have to really hate the factory wheels to spend the money for new wheels when I can get the same look and save a lot of money by keeping them and changing tire size.

Taco.jpg The 4 runner "snowflake" wheels fit taco's perfectly and I run 265/65/17's on them. My truck originally came with the 265/70/16's. I picked up the snowflakes from marketplace as dealer takeoffs because the owner had TRD wheels installed.

The TRD O/R trucks came with 16 inch wheels. The TRD Sport came with 17s. I have a set of 17 inch TRD black wheels on my TRD O/R. I bought the new wheels a few years back, BFG A/Ts:

I still use the 16s and put new Coopers on them for tow duty. The TRD wheels sit out about half an inch or a little more further out which looks nice and actually feels better on the road I think.

JFYI, the OD of a 265X75X16 (standard on the TRD O/R) is the same as the OD of a 265X70X17 (standard on the TRD Sport) tire and wheel combo. The speedometer will read the same as will the revs per mile will be very close to the same. The difference is sidewall height.

    Flyboy50sec,
I’m not sure what the “snowflake” wheels are but in today’s culture I prefer to avoid anything that may be misconstrued as “woke”. I am very happy with my white privilege and toxic masculinity. I really like the look and color options of the forerunner TRD’s. My stock rims look ratty and chipped. Trying to mod up my Tacoma and get to 300,000 miles.

As you can see by the photo what I call the "snowflake" wheels are. Kinda like the older trans am wheels.

    Flyboy,
I was kidding. They are nice looking rims but I like the TRD’s. My oem’s are shitty looking.
