Hello all - I have a brand new '16 AC TRD Sport with 6spd, and what I notice is there is some... Metal clunking underneath the truck. It is definitely drivetrain noise, not just something clanking on the underside.

I have driven manuals for decades, and I know there are is some issues with U Joints and U Bolts....

I have about 270 miles on her right now, I got up under the truck and looked and didn't see anything obvious.

Basically it's during times of shifting, I am pretty smooth with the clutch, but I definitely hear some clunking under the truck. I'm curious, is this normal, it's not a huge amount of noise or clunking, but it definitely isn't as smooth as say I'm used to in my Auto FJ or Auto 2012 Tacoma I had....

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!
    Mario

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Maybe check the cat heat shields mounted to the cab are secure.

Might just have to get used to it. My 2003 was really clunky until I drove it for a while and got used to the clutch engagement point. My 2015 took a little practice when shifting aggressively, but was overall much more forgiving.

Mine has 130 miles on it...does it from time to time when I shift lazily! Just a MT thing. Break in will help too and the more we get used to the tranny/clutch.

It's a shame the TRD 4X2 does not come in the Manual 6 Speed.

Check your spare tire isn't thumping around.
Also I agree with what others have said a brand new truck needs to be broken in brand new clutch everything. In 500miles re torque your u bolts the clutch and engine will quiet down with to was well

Mine does this. I have the 5 speed 4x4 4cyl. It seems to me like the new clutch is "grabby". By this, I mean as the clutch engages (any clutch) it will transition from kinetic friction to static friction. As the clutch and the pressure plate approach the same speed, when they get close enough, they will suddenly hook up. This transfers some excess kinetic energy from engine intertia into the drive train, which transfers that energy into the slack gears and creates drive line twist etc.
This should lessen when the clutch wears in and picks up a little oil. Be patient and try to let out on the clutch smoothly till you get some more miles on it.

    This is just my opinion.

I find the clunking can be worse when the truck is cold too. I pulled on the highway after work today, and when I threw it in sixth and let the clutch out...well, it didn't sound or feel good at all. It just happens sometimes.

I have the clunking in my DCSB trd MT. The clutch grabs when it's almost fully released and I think this causes the rough clunky shifts unless I let the clutch out very slowly. Also have a clunk in the rear when I go over bumps.
